Ely, who flew in an aeroplane from the deck of the tr. S. cruiser Birmingham to the shore, a.distance of some five miles, seems to have 'convinced sev- tfal newspaper editors of the efficien- cy, not to say the necessity, of a flo- tilla of aeroplanes as an adjunct to a fleet of warships. Some of the writ- ers have taken up considerable space in fanciful exposition of the conse- quences of an aerial assault upon a line of battleships. . All this sounds very plausible until the question arises as to how the birdmen are going to a.ight when their bomb-throwing from the clouds is at an end. The platform from which Ely made Ms ascent was 83 ' 1 o\£r, r but no aeroplane has yet which could be s_ ...-ifully handled that an operator may be certain of landing within an objective space so short as 83 feet or even 183 feet. The answer to this contention is of course easy, for it will be argued that four or five years age any prophecy of the present-day ach.ievem.ents in man-flying was looked upon as the wildest fancy. But if such a view is to be taken, allowance: must be made for other seemingly im- possible developments along lines of combatting the aeroplanes, such as the perfection of a gun which will shoot a mile toward the zenith with accur- icy, or the discovery of a rising- iTus gas which, will destroy all life in the upper air for miles around. Mr. Ely's stunt, therefore, appears to the conservative mind as a further revelation of the endless complica- tions and endless expense of modern warfare. To the Powers, doubtless, it is viewed with anything but joy, while to the advocates of disarma- ment it is hailed as a step nearer heir goal of idealism. CANADA'S PARLIAMENT, The session of the Canadian Parlia- ment which opens today promises to mark an epoch in the history of the Dominion, and the speech from the throne will he of unusual interest is its variety of topics. Canada not only has much to boast of in the progress of the past year, but there is much to look forward to is well. The good crops and the growth of the country's commerce are worth mentioning, of course, and the gratifying decision of The Hague tri- bunal in the fisheries dispute, the in the construction of the .••.-.:. '•'%:• a::d o her railway lines and the arrival of the first cruisers of the Canadian navy arc things to brag about. But that Canada has other things in view, such as a new banking act, the enlarging of the Welland ca- nal, the deepening of the lower St Lawrence channel, tne construction of a new bridge at Quebec, probable rec-i- in Ilii: pnMi r cunJilion on winch \<>.:r <',<>int health must depend i Guile of a Tricky Native Snake ! Frank A. Vanderlip, former assisi- ^nt secretary of the United States- Treasury and a noted authority on 11 nancial affairs, was born in Aurora 111., Nov. 17, 18(34. In his boyhood hi lived on a farm and later worked in a machine shop, but managed to obtain education at the University of 111! nois and the University of Chicago. His bideous occupation, weird incantations and strange pets sur- round the snake charmer witb a pe- culiar fascination 1 . His • magnetism and skill are considered phenomenal in tbe east. This specimen was tall and lank and !iad deep, cavernous eyes and au ab- stracted air Some of the, creatures were coiled around his wrist, which made him still more rppellant. He handled them as if thpy were per- fectly harmless About the neck he ; wore a chain with a flute attached. ; Two other jugglers accompanied him. similarly attired, but minus the snakes.
