Greene, of Montreal, who was so instrumental in saving her father's life Friday night is a remark- able young tady. Being an only child she is his constant companion. She is an excellent swim- mer and a splendid markswoman who delights in hunting, fishing and yachting, and though slight in form she has good power of endurance and is cool under the most trying circumstances. Mr. Greene and his family Were recently camping at J. H. Nbrmand's cottage at Morristown Park, where Flora occasionally gaveexhibitions .of her aquatic powers, by diving to the bottom at the steamboat landing, to encourage the other girls to learn to swim. Her accomplishment as a swimmer was a good thing to possess in the. Lachine Rapids Friday night. State Fair. The days of the State Fair at TJtica, are^ from the 22nd to 29th of September, inclusive. Opinions About tne Weatncr. A couple of young men on their way from church yesterday : Mercury standing at 84° in the shade; one remarks \ this is a nice cool day,\ the other looks up quizzically remarking \ I should say s o I'm jeady to melt.\ A few minutes later two ladies met .at the same spot. One says \its cool and nice!\ \Yes very\ was the reply. A second later No. 2 meets lady No 3, who says \what a terribly hot day this is!\ \Yes very oppressive,\ responds No 2. And so we go, one finding delightfully warm at at 60° and another chilly at 85°. Hot dwell- ings in winter and thick woolens in summer, have led some to believe that there is no summer where the temperature is 'less than 100° in the shade. J. H. Normand's neat little steamer Clifford left nere, at 11 a. m. Thursday for Dorvelle the summer residence of George E. Greene, of Montreal. Dorvelle is about three miles above Lachine on the north bank of the St. Law- rence river. She was manned by Moses Lasure captain, and Joseph Shareau engineer, both of this city. She ran the Galloup3 and Du Piatt rapids in fine style and to the canal at the' head of Sault, arriving at Cornwall all right. The distance from Cornwall to Yalleyfield, at the head of the Beauharnois canal, 40 miiesj was run in five' hours. Mr. Normand tele- graphed Mr. Greene that the boat Was on her way down, Friday morning. MR Greene. and his daughter, an only child, Flora, met the boat'Friday evening, at Yalleyfield and they passed through the canal, reaching the lower end about 10 p. m. There was to be a re- gatta at Lachine on Saturday, and Mr. Greene was anxious to get home that night, so as t o attend it with the Clifford; The boat made such rapid speed that they reached Lachine long before they anticipated, and mistaking an elec- tric light at the north end of the bridge building for the Canadian Pacific road two miles below Caughnawaga they' started for that. The nearer they approached the light the less they could see. - At 12 at night they struck, bow on, one of the scows en- gaged at the bridge. - in an instant the current caught her stern and swung her around, when a cable caught her Tipper-works, and the Clifford capsized. All were thrown into the water, but caught hold of the bottom of the steamer. Miss Greene is a courageous girl and a magnificent swimer. In a few seconds the Clif- ford righted and left them all in the rapid cur- rent. All could swim but Mr. Greene. His daughter procured a life preserver and put it upon her father, while Lasure and Shareau pro- vided themselves in the same way. Miss Flora then started to swim ashore, but hearing her father's cries for help, she returned to him. The nightmen working at the bridge, saw the acci- dent, and! seven Of them put out in a boat and picked them all up. Mr. Greene is indebted to the efforts of his daughter for the safety of his life. When the unfortunates were picked up the little steamer was seen rapidly floating down the Lachine rapids, but What became of her is unknown; On Saturday Mr. Green offered $100 for the recovery of the boat or any portion of her. The escape was most miraculous and was due entirely to the coolness and courageous efforts of Miss Greene, and the presence of the men at work on the railroad bridge. Cut tne Weed*. The last legislature amended the highway law so as to require overseers of every road district and street commissoners of every city and village to serve written 'notices on the occupants of all. premises to cut weeds, briers, and bushes, along the Toad or street in front of, or through the same, and if the work is not done within ten days after the service of such notice, then the work is to be done under the direction of the overseer or commissioner. When the overseer returns his warrant, he is required to make oath of the amount expended on account of each piece of property, and the commissioners of highways are required to certify these statements to the super- visors, who are to include the sums expended in the taxes assessed'against the lands on which the labor was performed. Tlic Sea Serpent Again. The Cayuga lake sea serpent has been heard from again, this time in the vicinity of Atwater's Landing. The reptile, or -whatever it may have I been, was discovered Sunday afternoon about 2 '• miles north of Atwater's. The following descrip- tion of the reptile was given to the Ithaca Jour- nal: /' \ We were several rods from shore leisurely rowing about, when we saw a huge black object suddenly rise from the water to the height of several feet. The snake's head seemed to be fully two feet broad, with large bright eye?. When we got on dry land we obtained a field glass and watched the monster until it swain down the lake a mile or two, when it disappeared. The serpent was fully as long as a telegraph pole and as large around. W e could see its snake- like motion as it glided through and over the waves.\ The same or a similar reptile was seen by four young men while out fishing, and by several employes on the Cayuga Lake railroad. This reminds us that nothing in the world will bulge a man's eyes like a snake. Why a hair snake in a puddle of roily water appears to a lone witness like a mammoth eel. An ordinary water snake under the right circumstances Would appear about as large as a telegraph pole. Since the scart boy saw the thousand ibxes, and the foxes finally petered down to a couple of neigh- boring cats, we have looked with suspicion upon reports of the sea serpent. Bobbins' monster Show. Ogdensburg will be visited on Saturday, Aug. 21st, by the Frank A. Bobbins circus, museum and menagerie, which will no doubt be remem- bered by. our\ amusement loving public as the show which gave such universal satisfaction when they exhibited in Preseott last year. As this will be-the only tent show at Ogdensburg this summer, it should be well patronized, The following is taken from the Westerly, R. I., Narragansett Weekly of July 29th: The Frank A. Robbins new show gave two entertainments in Westerly on Tuesday last. The'show is a well chosen aggregation of won- ders and deserves as it receives a large patron- age.: Under the circus tent the show is better than Forepaugh'g; The artists are first class; Where all isio well done it is difficult to partic- ularize. The beautiful Hindoo snake charmer is worth going a long distance to, see. Andrew Gafljney,. the modern Hercules, Linda Jeal, the queen of the bare-back riders, May Antonia on the high wire, Mile. De Granville, the female Samson, Harbeck, the contortionist, and Mile; Alma in the raid air flying rings were only a few of the specialties, each alone worth more than the price of admission. Then there was the novel and unprecedented herd of trained ele- phants, a sight which no one should miss, and last but not least we should fail to do justice to this great show should we not mention an entire new and unique feature, the masterly exhibition of the world renowned Chiv. Ira.W. Paine with pistol and rifle. We do not hesitate to say that Bobbins' new show is an effort- worthy of the- patronage of a discerning public. Cut by a. Circular Saw. Our Ohateangay, N. Y., correspondent, under date of August 3d,.says: \Amos Cooke, son of Prentiss. Cooke, of this town, while engaged in removing a slab from a circular saw in McGinnis' mill this afternoon, was drawn upon the saw and 1 his left arm completely severed from his body, Hi's bodjr was also nearly severed-from shoulder to hip. Needless to add that Ferry's warmest suppprfc ers in this patriotic policy were Dietz Monin and the other disinterested senators and-deputies. One of Ferry's principal newspapers actually had the impudence to declare that gold was s o plentiful in the new colony that the natives bred ducks solely for the purpose of collect- ing ;in their-guano the gold which the birds had swallowed with the river mud. This preposterous story reminds pne: forcibly of the Toulousieu who stated that he had Jet a match drop in a field and- the next summer he found there a forest; whereupon a Marseil. lias replied that that was nothing, since he having dropped a trouser button had found a whole pair of trousers on the spot just a week kter. Charles Ferry, whom his constituents have just declined to re-elect, recently purchased a magnificent house in the Kue St. George, for $100,000, although only a few years ago •he- was .a mere traveling salesman of the great arti- ficial flower manufacturer Watel. One of the most disgraceful financial transactions which have taken place in France in recent years is the Honduras loan. This small country, possessing no resources, with a population of about 500,000 inhabitants,, of which scarcely one-third are white, had during the past fifty years been uuable to pay a single cent interest on its national debt of 180,000 when suddenly a group of Paris financiers and statesmen took the matter in hand and successfully floated a Hondu- ras loan of $35,000,000. Of this sum only $3,- 000,006 ever reached the Honduras treasury, the remaining$32,000,000 being swallowed up by this syndicate under the head of commissions, bro- kerage, etc, The* principal members of the ring were Leon Say, Bischoffsheim, Dreyfus and Scheyer, and if anyone hesitates about believing the exactitude of the facts related above, says M. Drumont, let him consult the records xOf the French Chamber of Deputies of 1881. LOCAL NOTICES. - LOOAI. AsvBsnsracxnTS' will be inserted, under this heading,, at 15 cents per line. H.DITSON & Co., SOT Broadway, New York. A birds eye view of pur beautiful 1 city, just, at present,, from tbe dome of the Custom House, is enchanting. Our visual organs are greeted with a landscape flecked, with, neat public and private buildings and a forest of stately trees, that new artery of enterprise,- the street rail:- way,-lies before you, the murky colored water of the Oswegatchie is here discerned mingling itself with the bright and limpid; waters of the noble St., Lawrence, whose course is ever onward to the seia. While'reveling in the scenes before us, with' Chimney Island and the fishing grounds in the distahce, one is impelled to ask the ques- tiorij where the best fishing'tackle goods are t o be found in this city. Echo promptly answers that E. A. JNEWELL & C0;'S Fishing Tackle Department, this year, is perfect in its .appoint- ments and lower in price than the very lowest ever known before.
