Address, HOWARD ASaOGIATIOMjBox P, Philadelphia, Pa. (St22d4wSm) THE RESPOSESEBLtrEIES OS THE LIVER. The liver has a very important part to perform i n the animal economy. Its function is two fold. The fluid it secretes tempers the blood and regulates the bowels, and upon the quantity and quality \of the secretion de- pends in a great degree, the adaptation of the blood to the requirements of the system and the doe removal of the refuse matterwhlch remains i n the intestines after the work of digestion has been accomplished. One of the principal uses of Hostetter's Stomach Bit- ters is t o tone and control this somewhat only organ.— The ahtibillous properties ot the preparation are scarce- ly secondary to its virtues as a stomachic. Its opera- tion upon the liver is not violent Uke that of mercury, but gradual and gentle. Instead of creating a sudden tumult in that sensitive gland, i t regulates its action by degrees. Hence it i s a safe remedy for bilious disorders while mercury, being a tremendous excitant, is not. The more naturally and quietly a diseased organ can be re- stored <to itsi normal condition, the better, and it i s the peculiar property of this harmless vegetable alterative to reinforce and regulate without exciting or convuls- ing. The success which has attended its use as a reme- d y for affections ot the liver is proverbial. Persons of a billons habitwho take i t habitually as a protection against the attacks to which they are constitutionally liable, pronounce it the best liver tonic in existence.— The symptoms of an approaching bilious attack can hardly be mistaken. A pain, i n the right side or under the shoulder blades, a EaUron tinge in the whites of the eyes.sickheadache, a feeling of drowsiness, low spirits and loss of appetite, constipation and. general debility are among the usual indications of a morbid condition of the liver, and as soon as they appear the bitters sho'd be resorted to i n order to ward off more serious conse- quences. (stlOdly) . Extension and Improvements o l the Water Works. There seems to be some misapprehension in the public mind in relation to the proposition or plan submitted by the common council for the improvement and extension of the water works. Three times,we believe, since the opening of the, works, stoppages have occurred to the ma- chinery from the flow of anchor iee. The 1 first was at a time of fire. The liability of repetition (luring the winter season makes the providing of a steam engine a prudential act. The determina- tion of tb.Qi water power company to repair the canal, bulkhead and dam, the present summen will draw down the river so that the water power will be insufficient for the propulsion of the ma- chinery, and therefore the purchase of a steam engine becomes a necesssity . There is also frequent application for the ex- tension of ttho mains, and from the way the city is extending and increasing'in population, these applications will become more numerous in the future tham they are now. The common council have therefore after due consideration submitted a proposition which ia intended to cover all the wants of the city in thi3 respect Jor years to come. Tley ask for the authorization of the issue of bonds to the extent of §35,000. ' Of course it is notcxpected that bonds to tliia ex- tent will be issued for several years. It ia be- lieved that f 12,000 will meet the necessities of the present year. The remainder will be issued from time to time, as the necessitie s of th e case may demand. From the selfishness so prevalent with us all, it appears to be judicious to provide now for aill the extensions that may be needed , till such lime as it can be demonstrated that the works are a source of revenue to the city. I t is no part of the plan to extend the mains into streets where there are no buildings, but to issue bonds and lay pipe just as fast us actual necessity shall require. 4». When we are slcKthislife is obscured, under a cloud, oppressed with humors. Experience has taught us cer- tain means, which never fail for their removal. The child receives with his life the seeds of his death. It niay take one or a hundred years before the seeds bear their sad fruit, but just 8s sure as the seeds of death ripen, life ceases. \Purging is the grand safe- guard, because then what fosters the Beeds ot death are taken away, expelled from the body. Govern Yourselves oy Experience. My child, aged five years, had scarlet fever, and for five, days had constant fever. By order o t the doctor I gave her ayrup of rhubarb; she took nearly a pint, but her bowels continued closed. On the fifth day the doc tor aald her bowels must be opened or she would be lost. I proposed Brandreth's Pills ; t o this he would nob con- sent—saying she was too wealc. I consulted with my hus- band, and w e concluded to give her three pills. In about four hours they operated, copiously. After that operation the fever left her and she rapidly recovered. Reference, 20G Olermont Avenue, Brooklyn, FrlncipaUi;ency,Brandroth Hoqse.wswYoric. How true it ia that a good Providence sends every bird its food, but it does not throw itinio the nest, • Ko, indeed! I t is tho early bird that find3 the Worm. The little creature must hunt for its food and hunt early too. And so must farmers work early. The soil i3 given, but un- less they cultivate it, they can derive no food from it. Kemember, toilers upon the laud, that spring's work is close at hand, and if you don't take time by the forelock, your work will drive you when you ought to be master of your situation, and drivo your work. A stern chase is a hard one upon the land as well as upon the sea. Don't wait till all your work is pressing upon you at once, but begin now to do some things which may be done now as well as later in the spring. The world moves and so must you. Be careful in the selection of your seeds and of your soils. Plow deep, pulverize thoroughly, and cultivate wisely, and the Lord of the harvest will reward your labors.\ ceived tho pastor with partially suppressed ap- plause.
