Ira Dhpree, ot TwiggSj Georgia, writes a letter, which is published in the Macon Telegraph, to -say that he supports the Conservative ticket and holds himself in. readiness: .to address his colored friends in behalf of the Conservative party.— Whereupon the- Telegraph is in ecstacies._It is glad to see that \the negroes are coming out right in this election.\ It has no doubt that the \Democrats of Macon will be glad to hear the negro Dupree.\ We have no doubt if all the Democratic journals and Conventions would honeatl; welcome the colored people to the exer- cise of the rights of citizens and the elective franchise, and give unmistakable evidence of their sincerity, a proportion, of the- colored suf- frage would eventually be cast for their party, Of course remarks in. favor of negro suffrage in those States Where they have done their ut- most to prevent it, and where it has been con- ferred in spite of their opposition, are liable to ^be regarded only as decoys ant deceptive, but if the party would only take a stand in this State for the complete and full enfranchisement of the colored man, and labor earnestly to engraft it upon Us Constitution-, it would furnish evidence of sincerity that conld not be denied. There are, however, \a great many holes in a skimmer.\ If John Dupree, the colored man, stands before the world in an inconsistent poai. tion, he is no more an object of derision than the editor of the Macon Telegraph and other con- servatives who exhibit so much new born love far the negro. If the whole thing is a game of cheat in which each side is trying to use th'eotb. er for political effect, we think the unanimous verdict of disinterested witnesses will be that the \colored man\ has completely euchred the conservatives of Georgia. Squelched, Senator Henderson, of Missouri, one of the Republicans whoi* voted to acquit Mr. Johnson, took occasion, on Sunday evening, in the Sen ate, to attempt the demolition of Gen. Butler, who conducted the investigation in regard to tbe alleged corruption in the impeachment-business. Mr. Henderson's remarks were very bitter. The reply of Gen. B., maae in the House, on Mon- day, and which, is couched in the most gentle- manly and parliamentary language, completely squelches tbe Senator. Poor Stanberry, who got so sick of the attempt to demolish Mr. Butler in the first days of the impeachment trial, did not make half so bad a miscalculation in estimating the calibre of Benjamin Butler. If there was was the hast doubt about the influence which controlled the vote of ^Mr. Henderson on the impeachment verdict, we think it has been removed now. We wonder if any more of the President's friends court a tilt with the General. \The observations of the TJ. S. Engineer Corps, whieh bas charge of the Lake survey, taken for the purpose of fixing accurately the lat- itude and longitude of the, totyns and cities on the northera frontier, have afforded the Oswegojand Buffalo papersan opportunity for squibbing. The Buffalo Commercial quoting from the Oawego Times the notice of the presence ot the engin- eer corps at that city says '•': \It is high . time something is done to inform the public where that obscure village is lo, be found.\ The Time* retorts:by saying that the engineers have been sent .from that place to-search-for Buffalo, and that that unimportant hamlet should express its thanks to the party which oomes-to rescue them from oblivion.\ The observations spoken ol are for the pur- pose of determining the exact latitude and lon- gitude of pouita on lakes Erie and Ontario, with a view to a general and accurate chart of these inland seas. The party, take observations simul- taneously at three points. Those first taken were Ogdensburg, Watertown and Oswego. Thence the patty swung round.-as it,, were, and rfbw the three points are Buffalo, Rochester\ and Gswego. In the system pursued, the longitude is deter- mined by the use of the telegraph, in connection with the transit telescope and chronograph.— the latitude is arrived at by a method known as opposite and, nearly equal meridian zenith dis. tances, by the use of the zenith telescope. Having succeeded in finding Buffalo, we hope the engineer corps will have no difficulty in fix- ing its latitude and longitude as well as its com- mercial status. From its persistent and vehe- ment opposition to the construction of that great National Highway, the Niagara Ship Canal, the Impression has become universal that Buffalo is a miserable little \Skinnerville\ located a little One side of the proposed avenue, and whose in- habitants have thus far subsisted by sucking their substance from the veins and arteries of commerce. Monday, Gen. Howard issuad orders reducing the number of agents of the Freed- men's Bureau, in South Carolina, Arkansas and other portions of the South. He will continue toUsue similar, orders. When, the bill termi- nating the affairs of the Bureau goes into effect, it will be virtually forestalled. distressing cough causes the friends of the sufferer almost as much pain-as'tiie sufferer himself, and should receive immediate attention. Give cheers to the butcher Forest, and shake hands with the slave-master Wade Hampton, not because they have repented their niisdeeds, but because they glory in them. Give them once more the control, and let them again op- press the loyal men by whose aid the Union was maintained. The Republican party, by the declarations) of jts platform,,say 3: Let us have honesty; and let us maintain our credit and promote economy by meeting our contracts as soon as we can do so. Let us not ignore the promise of the legal tender notes to pay dollars to the bearer on de- mand, but meet that promise in real dollar* as 'soon as we can and then let us provide for the payment of our other bonds when they are due. The Democratic party says:. Let us refuse to recognize the promise of the legal tender notes, and let us force the creditors of tbe Government, who hold bonds bearing interest, to bike in place of them these notes which bear no interest, land which we never intend to pay. The Democratic party says : These five-twen- ty bonds were given tomeu who furnished \the United States-army with shot »nd Shetland pow- der with .which some of our brethren, who else would'have been here in Convention with us, were murdered. Shall we pay such obligations? No! let us tax them! let us ignore the fact that the income of these bonds is now taxed ini the same manner »3 all other income; let us deceive the people by the false statement that they are not taxed, and then, under the guise of taxation, let us confiscate them.. We care not for widows and orphans, or savings banks which hold these bonds; we appeal not to reason or. to principle ; our power has always been in the ignorance of our followers, and is so still.* 7OO Miles of Union Pacific Railroad. The Union Pacific Railroad Company do riot disappoint the public. They said the; would do their part towards having a railroad to the Pacific in 1870, and they are going to do it in 1869.— They have 700 miles done now, and they expect to have 900 done this year ; and yet, 'notwith- standing this speed, the Government Commis- sioners and others pronounce it a first-classu-oad in every respect. It has *Z8 locomotives and ov- er 900 cars in. constant use, and nearly twice as many more are ordered. It laid 60,000 tons of rails before 1867, and about 50,000 tons more' will be required in 1803. 20,000 men at work, west of the highest point of the Rocky Moun- tains, and Brigham Young has all the maleiMor mons that can be spared from their domestic du- ties digging a way eastward towards Gentil'e civ ilization. The Central Pacific Company are also actively engaged, and there is now little doubt that the two roads will meet in 1869, and that the traveler may see the sun rise on Monday . morning over Boston Harbor and set through the Golden Gate of the' Pacific on Saturday night. The business that will go over this line will be something remarkable. Tens of thou- sands here are anxious to join their friends in the new £1 Dorado, and as many there arei anx- ious to return to the homes of their youth.— New mines are waiting only, for means of com' >, munication to be developed, and the bullion of Australia, and the teas and silks and spices of Asia, will seek the Pacific Railroad as tbe read- iest and cheapest means ot reaching a market. Many persons predict that a double trask will at once be necessary—oiie.] for the slowly-moving freight trains and tbe other for swift passenger trains, which will permit nothing to remain iin the w*y of the impatient traveler. If the Govern- ment .had not loaned its credit, this work would friever have been done ; no private capitalists would have invested over a hundred million dol- lars in any such enterprise. But the Govern- ment gave the Company the right to issue! First Mortgage Bonds upon the road, and took a sec- ond mortgage for its own security, but thei com- pletion of the work will more than double the value of all the national domain in its vicinity. •and make the First Mortgage Bonds one of the safest and most profitable! investments in the country. Madrid Mineral Spring. ;KniTOHOF THERgPDBUCAN This Spring is creating a great deal of interest in tbe Vicinity, of Madrid: Depot,' within a. few jrods of which it ia^ located. It is a large spring (impregnated with iron,: magnesia, soda &e.,. and sis said to be a powerful tonic. Messrs. Lemon 'and Peck have-excavated the spring tothe depth {of seventeen feet, bringing up the pure water jfrqai the. fountain. They have bricked and ce- imented it up, and the water is so clear that one (Can see the bottom of the spring—and , so cold 'that it is equal to the best ice water, being only itwelve degrees above freezing. People are flocking in vast crowds to this modern Siloam, .every train that paises bringing more or less 'patrons to be treated without money or expense. iSome of the best mineralogists and chemists have carefully analyzed the water and pronounce it equal to any in tbe State.
