A. N. DEMING, H. P. UNDERWOOD, .*j - JASON BRUSH, «? District Committee., J Enlargement of th e Journal. We present THE JOCRNAI. to its readers, this morning, in an, enlarged form. We have been compelled to take this step in order to meet the demands upon our advertising columns, and; to keep pace with the prosperity of pur growing young city. THE JOURNAL was ushered into ex- istence on the first of Hay, 1855, in very small . form, and has steadily grown in public favor till we are now able to spread before the public a very respectable sized daily. The rates of sub- scription remain the same as for the smaller size; which are less than any other paper of the same dimensions in the country. - :. ' Hereafter we will not be compelled to set put the notices of our advertising patrons, except on extraordinary occasions, and a cause of complaint will consequently be removed* * • .. The Tax Bill, The consideration ofthe Tax bill was resumed in Committee of the Whole, <of the Bouse of Bfr!, presentatives, oh Friday, thettebate being' inost-- ly confined to the section relative to taxing i- United States Bonds. The proposition to tax '. the interest paid to Banks, on Government ' Bonds, was defeated. The bill.was reported J to the House, and all the amendments made, in committee down to the one striking, out section 108, were agreed to Without a ; division. Mr.' Butler called for the yeas and nays onstriking out the section {taxing Banks and, Bankers, and the amendment was rejected^—yeas; 61, nays 71. So the section stands a3 originally re- ported by the Committee on Ways and Means:^ Section 209 was restored to the bill, which then passed without division. Difficult Feati. , ' The TJtica Herald says sawing wood, at the depth of thirty feet, was recently accomplished' at Woonsocket, to which weimay add a young man, in New York, has operated a contrivance by which he skips in the air a hundred feet at a time; but these are nothing to the feat'.which the Democratic leaders wish to try in the pending political canvaBS. The TJtica Herald a&ya they, want to stand on the old-fashioned \State Sover- eignty\ and secession platform, while they run a candidate on the Republican platform, embody-, ing all the live issues of the day. This is a feat hitherto never attempted in politics, and j al- though very difficult, they hope to make it work. The trial will furnish the public with amuse- ment for the whole campaign. , . v. Mr. Knaak, of Germany, has gone back on the ideas of, Gallileo. He says the world does not move, but that the sun, moon and stars '%o bobbing 'round,\ it every twenty- four hours. He argues that it is absurd to try to reconcile science with, revelation. ' Knaak is the beat specimen of a fogy in existence, and t is entitled to. the palm.. It says •\>'; W 'the New ¥ork Races' are not exciting, it will not be for want of 'entries,' nor of foreign horses.— Truly it seems as if the demoralization of the Democratic party, wiich set in last Fall,, just . after the elections, and the cry, for a particular purpose, of 'policy' you must be careful r to get Republican. vote% and not .drive them off |by nominating 'ojut men,' seems now to bespread- ing far and wide. The humanity of this action is vindicated by recent itatistics, which show that of 90,019 .men em- barked at Macao between the years \1861 ind 1866, only 78,728 arrived at thJr destination; and of 60,844 of these, only fO,872 remained, alive at the end often years. | , A dispatch from JacksoL Miss., says the rats/claim that they .htaajjrried the 21 O'NeUl in a New Field.
