John Woodward, of Brockville, an employee' of the Grand Trunk JEailway, testified that a man got off the Sunday morning train on the 15th, and\ started east on the railroad track. He had on dark clothes and a drab carpet bag uride'r'his '.'Aria,, He thought 'the man was about the size of McPalls, but could not identify the prisoner as the man.— iThis is the only testimony yet offered in the case, of an important character. Chas. Baker, the man with tine steel lift on his boot, was pleased from custody and put < upon the stand as a witness. He took good care to swear himself clear of any complicity i in the killing of Sykes. The case was adjourn- ed till Tuesday, 1t\\, when, unless something 1 new turns up, tlie prisoner, Mcl&lls, will prob- ; ably be discharged. There is something, about : the man Baker's conduct that' iai not entirely satisfactory, but there has been no evidence suffi- ; cient t o hold any one. . Business Change. LONDOK, 2.—In the debate jn the House of Commons last night on the Irish Church question, the Liberals stoutly advocated Mr. Gladstone's claims to office in place of Disraeli. Mr. Robert Lowe,, member for Colne, quoted statistics to show that out of one hundred of the population of Ireland, seventy-eight were'Catho- lics, nine were Presbyterians, and twelve be- longed to the Irish Potestant Church establish- ment. The latter church was alone -aided by the Government, though its congregations were made up of the- wealthiest classes of .the community. The Irish people would be more than human if they coulrj tamely submit to this The tones claimed to:be truly liberal'. Let them'prove it or retire. The Liberal party, in the House, had a leader whom they could trust. They were sure ie would fulfill all his professions. Mr. Lowe ridi- culed what he termed the legal quibble and course of the Ministers. Such ajine of -action would destroy all confidence between the Exec- utive and legislative departments of the Gov erument. ' •' Each night the ministry presented to J.he House a new phase, until all honest men were disgusted. The premier had carried inconsist- ency and audacity to aheight which the House, consulting its dignity, could- not tolerate on a topic so solemn as that under discussion.
