After the President's answer was read,' hia counsel made application for thirty' days to prepare for trial. Th* Unitid Service Oatttit, a Canadian journal published at Ottawa, and which aspires to be the . Organ of the military, and naval forces of the \Dominion in a recent leading article of the ' most; bellicose character, entitled \Yankee Sympathy With Fenfaniam,\ expresses the following modest opiuion: , ' \A short, sharp and decisive policy, like that pursued in the affair of the. Trent, is the only safe policy with Yankees.\ From this startling paragraph the eye wanders until it rests upon \The Queen's Own Rifles, General Orders,\ in the same sheet, when it instinctively seeks the editorial head, expecting to discover that the gallant Colonel Boker of that Spartan corps has abandoned the sword for the pen, but finds only the insignificant individ- uality of a Military School Cadet to reward its search. Yet the suggestion is not a poor one, and we 1 commend the spirit of it to the English Govern- ment. We are not among; those who would seek to encourage any sentiments of discord or ill-will between the two countries, yet such insolent cockneyisniS as the one alluded to, are not calculated' to. ensure the fraternal relations that the Canadians profess to so much desire. All Americans remember, - but too well that exhibition of British \short ! sharp and decisive policy.\ The policy of a cowardly ^ministry that seized the single oppor- tunity to insult, when it dare not injure. British demands were acceeded to, it is true; yet it was because the American Nation registered a vow of indemnity for the future to behold executed. A surfeit of victories has almost caused us to forget that the vow was uttered; but it the \-residents of Canada desire, uiw .protect them from the onslaught of Fenian legions who demand but an opportunity of confronting not only her \Queen's Own\ and; \Boyal RiHes' brigades of all designations, but also all of the - sforccB that; England can marshal against them, , it is proper that the domineering spirit of her \fuss and feather brigade\ be restrained within ' due limits. J. G. Mclntyre, Esq. tendered the thanks of the citizens of the village for the visit paid them by the members of the Institute. After which Miss Rice wasi called out and responded in a clear and forcible manner, speaking of the res- ponsibilities resting upon the true teacher. Dr. Bates offered the following sentiment:— \Miss Parsons—a real parson, a parson indeed —commencing; where a true parson should, to do away with {the little sins, and to bend aright the little twigs.!\ Miss Parsons responded in a brief and feeling address, speaking of her attachments to the teachers of St. Lawrence County, and closed by bidding- them a kind adieu. Dr. French also made some remarks. During the last hour a deep feeling of sadness was manifested, and all felt that the most pro- fitable Institute ever held in this County, was about to close., The Chair announced that the St. Lawrence County Teachers' Association would meet at Potsdam Junction on the 29 th day oi December next; after which the Institute was declared ad- journed.
