It is an eetabllshed fact that old bens will produce stronger and more vigorous chicks than young ones. If you want to raise early chicks, it is time you began to separate your breed ing pens, and look up setting Ivns. It you expect to exhibit fowls next fall, you should get some eggs on tbe way soon, for the large pullets and cork* erels generally take the preference. Give tbem a head of cabbage occasion ally. They will leave nothing but the stump. Raw turnips, boiled potatoes, otc given whole will help to keep them busy Did you ever try the experiment of ad wrtlslng fresh eggs for sale f Let it once become known that you can furnLth good freshly laid eggs to those wanting them, and you will find people coming to you lu preference to taking their chances at the stores. Try it In our Want\ column. Sift coal ashes freely about your hen house, under the perches, in the scratch ing pen, and all around. Nothing •©- curt* immunity from lice and keeps hens in good condition so completely as plen ty of fine dust. Put a box of sifted coal ashes in the house for thehenn to wallow In. They will tnjoy It. A little poultry powder Is a good thing for fowls, but don't for a moment think you can poke enough of it Into your hens to make them lay, without other matters are looked after as well. A horse can't live on condition powders, nor a man on mandrake pills, but must have proper food and shelter and attention, as well. Just to rrith bens. With proper food and attention, an occasional dose of poultry powders will help along the egg laying. Each hen will make known her faults and vices, even If her good qualities can not be discovered. When she lays an egg she makes a nobe about It, and her cotub looks bright and scarlet during ber busy season. When the is adding noth ing to her egg-bosket she sings no songs, her comb shrivels and becomes pale. Each hen indicates when sbe is a pro duce?. The farmer or poultry man can select the profitable) from those that con sume food without rendering an equiv alent. Every flock contains a few bens that ore supurlor to the others. The dock as such may not pay for Its sup port, yet it may have In it one or two hens that cannot be surpassed as layers. But tbe few productive hens may have Imposed upon them the task of support ing all tho Idlers, simply because the ac count Is kept with the flock Instead of with them. As the eggs gathered are from the whole number of hens, the Idlers soon disgust their owner, who sends the entire flock to the market- stalls as unprofitable.\—Poultry Keeper. CUBBETT TOPICS. The church was moved in order to admit light Into the rooms of a big hotel on Michigan avenue at the corner of Twenty-third street. The hotel directly adjoined the Imman- uel Baptist church, and new owners of the hotel figured that the rooms next the church would be worth more If they had more light. They paid for the entire cost of moving the church, bought new land for it to stand on, and also bought the lot from which It was moved.
