Breeds n»iy coine and brssvU may go but the Leghorn will be with us forever. The Brown Leghorn is without doubt one of the best breed of fowl* In exist ence to-day. The/ are one of the oldest breeds and while some of the new breeds hsve come and go no, this breed has more than held its own and is to-day more popular than ever; tbey have by their good qualities earned for themselves a i reputation second to none, and one that will stand as InaTg as chickens are bred.' There is no^by&d to-day that can exrel them for tilling the egg basket, and this 1* not their only good quality, they are ijuick growers and though small make very good eating as their bo&wa are plump and solid; an old hen that 1* good and fat when dxeseed makes a very line appearance. What bieed is them that are prettier or more uprightly from the time they leave the shell than the Rrown Leghorn? And they make the nicest kind of pets if rightfully lumdled. When properly bred they are a very handsome bird and have a host of admirer* a t poultry shows, which shows that they are held in high esteem by the people. They are not a bard breed to bring to a high standard of perfection , of course one must know enough about them to judge what are the requirement* of a good bird and the rest i* easy. A *bow bird or one to breed show birds on the male aide must be large for the breeds have* good stiff, erect, fire point comb, not too large or beefy, should be dark in color and have that proud, \head and tail up\ carriage, that is so pleasing to see, avoid too large comb*. We find that we obtain a Larger per cenL of good combe from a four paint male, than from one with six. The female should also be targe, as the tendency with Leghorns is to run small, should have a medium sixed comb with five or six distinct points, when held up will look like the male's comb, their comb should as a rule (and es pecially for female breeding) fall to one side and should be fine and soft to the touch. The color of back and wings should be that delicate penciled brown which so pleases the fancier; for puUet breeding the females should not have the least shade of red or brick dust in tho wingu, but this is valuable for cockerel breed ing ; there also should be one or more females In each pen with good stiff, straight combs which will add strength to the male combe. Below you find article from the Poul try Keeper which we heartily indorse. Those wishing a beautiful, hvdy fowl that Is always ready for busmen, will make no tolatftke in chomlng the Rro«n Leghorn. \No breed of fowls ever In troduced into this country ha* proven of greater value to the poultry men than the Leghorns. They may be highflyer*, nervous, active and restless under con- flnement, but they can afford to have all these drawbacks and still hold a front place among breeds. They are small in size, but that is an advaqtage, for they quickly mature, and begin to lay when only five months old, whereas, If they attained great weights they would not begin to lay until seven months old. The difference of two months In the period of taylog 1* oamethiog not to be overlooked, a* It represents probably two dozen eggs at least, or fully the value of the hen herself The Leghorns do not alt, but will la/ on when other breed* are fast on the nest*. As improvers of the common flocks, the Leghorns are superior, CA they strongly impress their characteristics on all their offspring. So firmly establiahed are they, that a single Leghorn cock, with a flock of a dozen hens, will produce chics* almost exact ly like the Leghorns, although the hens may be of all shapes and colors, Once procuring a dash of Leghorn blood, It will show for few or five generations, a* .well aa Increasing the prolificacy of the flock.
