Mr. Boat wick of St. Peter's church preached in St. Paul s church (lobbing Peter to pay Paul as it were) and the church was crowded to its utmost capacity. Blotte r Boat- wick opened up his batteries on the Sun day liquor business, and he bandied the question without gloves, as it well de serves. He made many statements that might have been startling to many of bis hearers, but be said he was fully pre pared to prove every statement. That the Sunday liquor bus'ness is being car ried on to a great and disgraceful extent there is no doubt, and the dealers have to be called down sharply every s o often to keep them down even t o a back door business. Mr. Boatwick Ins been inves tigating it on the quiet for some time, and is in a position t o kno w what be is talking about, and Is entitled to great credit for thus bringing the matter before the public. That the work s o ably begun may be closely followed up is the earnest wfeh of every l*w obfervinjr, citix*n in this place. However much men may compromise themselves in the matter of selling liquor through the week, they have no Hornse to sell oc Sunday, and should be brought u p standing every time they attempt It. •BATHS. Yet it seems to me that, like a Sunday worship, one day o f thanksgtv< lug for an entire ycer of blessings is very inadequate. We are too apt to drift In to a formal, listless manner o f worship, and our annual Thanksgiving becomes a custom without heart and without mean ing Let us shake ourselves free from all conventionalities and ceremonialisiui As Chrfat rent the veil o f Judiastic forms and rite*, revealing himself in simplic ity and truth, no longer a mystical bat a real sacrifice, s o the church of Christ to-day should rend the evil of cere monies and stand before the Lord and before the world as the bride of Christ adorned only with the robe of his right- eousno-s with which he would have her clothed upon. God wants not thanksgiving services but thankful hearts. Paul commends the giving o f thanks 1 Q the text and gives explicit directions as to : Whe n w e shall give ; for what »e - should be thankful; to who m and the manner in which thanks are to be rendered. There Is no t a heart beating i n this house to-night, bnt has many things for which to return thanks. God baa pur chased, at prices beyond computation, a claim to the gratitude of every heart. 1. Giving thanks always. David sings * I will blew the Lord at all times, his praise shall continually be In my mouth.\ Whe n days are darkest, give thanxs; tvhect storms and tempest rage; and the beauty o f His face seem* to be veiled in mists o f tears, give thanks. The shadows cast by the clouds are but : evidence that \Bshind the cloudr U the: sun still shining.\ The shadow* that come Into our lives are surety that above the trials and sorrows from whfch thsy are cast Is the brightness and glory o f our Father* one hanging love. \Whe n darkness veils h b lovely fec$, \Wel l rest on hi* unchanging grace.* Let us not grumble becaooe of the shadows but be thankful for the unchangahlenem of God's love, A heart thnt fa \giving thanks always** is like a spring of ever living water In a desert waste, spread ing verdure and beauty *U aruund.
