The interior of the two-story tene- | ment house at No. 112 Wakshingion street owned by William, David and Joseph Younglove, was destroyed by fire this morning at an early hour. The first alarm was sent by telephone | co the fire Shanon at 2:55 o'clock by a family that resijes next door. Al- most instantly after an alarm was rung in from box No. 16 at the cor- ner of Washingion street and Mar- When Driver Maynes started his horses out of the station, the sky was brilliantly lighted by the fire and although a very few minutes were consimed] in reaching the scene of the blaze, the fire had made such progress that the interior was a mass of flames. . Three streams were directed into che burning building, which is of rame copsuruction, but it was im- possible for the firemen to do more than confine the damage to the in- lerior. The inmense cold made the work of fighting the fames the more arduous and inflicted quite severe suffering on those who were obliged io be out of doors handling the hose. Peirer Chatelain helped out the fire- men by furnishing them wich hot coffee. The cause ' of the fire could not be ascertained. It was reported at the fire this morning that the family of Tony Ranier, the oocupant of the building, which is used as a boarding house, iad been caught in the flames and Jurned to death. It was impossible o go inside the structure when the .remen arrived to verify any such umor, so when the flames had been ubdued, a search was made, but ater developments proved that the lamily was not in the building, ani that no one had been burned. Mr. Gagon arose at his usual nour and went out on the porch of his bome to look at a thermometer. Reifurring he made some comment on the weath=ss and sat down await breakfast. Ho soon complain- ed of not being able to see objects and immediately after tecame un- conszsious and before medical assist- ance could te summoned the man. ' passed away. 'the deceased was 52 years of age and practically all his life had been | passed in Amsteriam. He was a conspicuors figure in the politics o' | the fourth ward of the city of Am- sierdaim, being actively with the Republican party. Mr. Gag- en was a painter by ocfupation. Be- sides his wife he is survived by four sons and four daughters. He also leaves one brother, John H. Gagen. also of Amsterdam. The funeral of Mrs. Emily Gurnee was held at the late home, No. 112 South Main street, this morning at 110:30 o'clock and was very largely attended. There were many floral trioutes from the family and friends | of the deceased. The Rev. W. W. Ellsworth, pastor of the St. John's Episcopal church of Johnstown was the officiating clergyman,.
