Oou>»K TBXT.-Behold, the heaven, and the aaaven ot heavens, cannot contain thee.—1 Kinga The dedication of the now completed temple was an occasion of solemn and mag- Mfloent display. Jerusalem had witnessed no day like it. Not only the elders of Is- rael and heads of the tribes and chief of tbe fathers were there, but all the men of Israel also (8: 1, 2). It was a national day, and the whole nation came together to celebrate the oompletion of the holy and beautiful house that had been so long N OTICE.-By order of David F. Then came a procession from Gibeon, bringing the old tabernacle with its holy vessels, the candlestick, the ghew-bread, the brazen serpent and the ancient brazen altar. At Mount Zion this procession was joined by another, bearing tbe Sacred Ark, with its two tables of the law, from the temporary house built for it hj David there. Passing in through the portals of the temple, the priests bore the Ark to its place under the wings of the oherubim in the Most Holy Place. As the priests re-appear there is a great outburst •et music; thousands of singers and musi- cians with cymbals and psalteries and harps and trumpets, arrayed in white cobes, making one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord, saying: \For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever\ (2 Chron. 5: 12, 13). The most remarkable event of all was that which transpired as the priests came from the holy place in the midst of all tiiefta praises. This was the entrance into the temple of a cloud, which filled the house BO that the priests could not stand to minister, ' 'for the glory of the Lord had . filled the house of the Lord\ (10, 11). It was God's way of accepting the offering now made to him. It was more than that; by this aot he verified his presence in the dwelling provided for him. The oloud was the sign of his presence; but it especially signified the mystery that surrounds him, for none can comprehend him or bear the It was after this that Solomon first spoke to the people, then offered the dedication prayer, then blessed the people, and con- cluded all with twioe seven days of sacri- fices and feasts. But let us look a title more particularly at the dedication prayer. 1. Solomon begins with adoring praise (28, 24).—It is said he \stood before the altar of the Lord.\ This must mean that he took his place there, and is not meant to indicate his posture. For further on (64) we find that he kneeled. The king Vas not ashamed to kneel before his maker. Four things come out in these two Terses of praise, (a) He addresses God as incomparably great: \There is no God like thee in heaven above or on earth be- neath.\ (ft) He speaks of his wonderful condescension in \keeping covenant and meroy with his servants.\ (c) He notes the divine discrimination in his regards, which are for Buoh as \walk before him with 'all their hearts.\ (d) He makes mention of his faithfulness in \keeping with David that which he has promised.\ Praise and thanksgiving are always good beginnings of prayer. Faith and humility and love all delight to praise God for his excellency, fail condescension, his holiness, and his faithfulness. And God is pleased with those who thus approach him. 2. His first petition is for the perpetuity and welfare of the kingdom (25, 26.— • 'Therefore now keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him,\ etc. He makes God's promise the guide of his petition, and his reason for confident asking; teaching us thus that, if we would increase our confidence in ask- ing, we must study the promises. Then oar prayers will accord with the divine will. The particular promise Solomon referred to was that his kingdom might endure, and that God would not withdraw his favor from it, even though the people should fall into sin. This is clear from what follows. So we are to pray for ottr own land; and that God will spare the her- itage he haB given us. But Solomon does not ask that he will disregard his own ap- pointed conditions. He cannot be expect- ed to bless any family, or government, or rulers, or people who will not \take heed to their way.\ 3. He sets the house apart as a place where God shall meet and bless his people. (27—30). This is the crown of his prayer. He asks that God will accept and own this place as his special dwelling place; the one place where, and toward which, he would have his people pray. Jesus said: \ It is written, My house shall be called a house f praver.\ And yet at the beginning he disclaims the thought that God can be limited to a single place: \Behold the heaven, and heaven of heavens,\ that is, the heavens in all their vast extent, \cannot contain thee.\ '-'Yet,\ he says, \have respect unto the prayer of thy servant:\ and the prayer is that God would have a special look toward \this house;\ would more sorely hear his people when they Hhould pray toward it. So God has special dwelling places, in- finite and omnipresent an he is. He in- habits eternity, and yets dwells in every humble and oontrite heart. He is in every Christian home. He is specially present in praying assemblies. His people may confidently expect to find htm with a full- ness of blessing in houses truly consecrat- ed to his worship and devoutly kept for tha*. use. Solomon's chief request was that the temple might be God's meeting place with his people. 4. Along with some particular petitions, he pleads God's forgiving grace for sin- ners (31—361 It is not necessary to de- termine why he made these specific peti- tions. But a noteworthy point is that he owned that all the distresses that oould come on God's people would be caused by their sin in turning from God, and that they could hope for forgiveness only on condition of their returning to him with confession, prayer and new obedience. Much is gained when men see them- selves as sinners, and this gain comes of knowledge of God as holy. More is gained when men feel that all miseries come of departure from God; that in separation from him no true and lasting good is pos- sible. But the gain is complete when c sees that God is able and willing to hi and heed the cries of those who retui with confessions and prayers, from their sins unto him, and, seeing, actually trusts and so returns. Solomon saw all this. His prayer had thus the gospel spirit in it. For personal as well as sanctuary dedications, it was a model prayer. N OTICE.-By order of David F.
