Scientific Miscellany. —Scientific investigation by Prof. Pon- Lck, of Breslau, has verified the suspicion that all common mushrooms are poisonous. Washing and boiling deprive them of their poisonous qualities in a greater or less de- gree. Dried mushrooms require at least a month of drying, and are not really safe intil after four months, —A natural intermittent spring has re- cently formed in the French Alps. The .vater appears at regular intervals of five and seven minutes, about ten quarts being yielded each time. A singular circum- stance is that one flow of water is lukewarm md colorless, while the next discharge is :old and wine-red. —Prof. Young, in the light of Meyer's calculations, regards it as highly probable that the comet of 1880 was a return of that of 1843. Concerning the comet of 1G68 too little is known to form the basis of a theory as to its indentity. He is quite cer- tain, however, that the comets of 1880 and 1882 are not the same, as they have periods too great to be consistent with such a view. He thinks it more likely that they are moving in nearly identical orbits, with perhaps a common origin in some an- :ient disruption, like that which divided Biela's comet in 1840, —It was asserted by a Brazilian delegate to the Geneva Sanitary Congress that coffee is a natural antidote to alcohol, and that the consumption of alcoholic stim- ulants is comparatively small where coffee is a popular drink, as in his own country. —It is a very general belief that during a considerable fall a person must be asphy- .ated by the rapid rush through the air, which constantly accelerates as the dis- tance fallen increases. The young girl by a leap from a height of about 215 feet has raised a discussion of this subject among French savants. Dr. Bronardeli suggested that asphyxiation may have caused the girl's death before the ground was reached. Mons. Bontemps objects to this view, and points out thai the velocity attained in such a fall must be sometimes exceeded by railway trains, and yet engineers and stokers are never as- phyxiated. Mons. Remy states that 1852 he was shown a native of the island of Oahu who had fallen from a verified height of about 1000 feet with but little in jury, his fall having been broken near the end by a growth of ferns and other plants. The weight of opinion seems to favor the view that, if asphyxia ever results during falls, the distance fallen must be very great. —The old experiment of table-turning has given evidence of an unknown force which has perplexed scientific men and fostered the trickery of charlatans and pro- fessors of the black art. In genuine table- turning phenomena, where the table is too heavy to be turned by the unconscious muscular action of the hands placed upon The Squatter Caught, j Arkansas Traveller. ; The descendant of the old squatter can j be very accommodating at times, but the \ time must be very favorable. His evasion, even of the simplest questions, illustrates a '• peculiar humor, repaints a fancy handed i down to him. The other day, while the j proprietor of a very retired piece of badly j improved propertywas standing at his gate, j a gentleman rode'up and pleasantly bid the j farmer good morning. | \Wait'll I fix this yoke-bow,\ he re- | plied, taking up a piece of steer-harnses j and beginning to whittle on it, \an' I'll! wer yo' interrogation pints. Faraday demon- itrated that lateral pressure on the part of the operators always accompanied the movement of the table, and Dr. Percy R. Wilde now claims to have proven, by means j of instruments of his own construction that the unconscious lateral pressure isdu< to a slight rotatory motion imparted to the body at every breath by the action of the powerful muscles of the chest. —It is maintained by Nordenskiold that the aurora is a permanent phenomenon in polar regions, appearing constantly when the sun is below the horizon and the moon is invisible. —Prof. Moos, Heidelberg, has found good reasons for believing that many rail- way accidents have been due to defective hearing on the part of engineers or others in charge of trains. Girard, director of the Paris Municipal Laboratory, gives some interesting information concerning the adulterations by which the French people are victimized. The most extensive im- posture of this kind seems to be the adul- teration of flour, which is mixed with vari- ous mineral substances—often of a poison- ous nature. It has been certainly ascer- tained that \That doesn't count in law.\ \Mebbe it don't jedge, but them gals and me talked it all over, and they was mighty attached to each other, and said it was a pity for me to take one of them trip- lets and break the set, so we jest concluded to hang together, and I'll be durned if we wasn't hangin* right out for Utah, and no mistake.\ \The law does not recognize any such excuses.\ \All right, old man; go ahead.
