O u t of a population o f over 8,000 in the village o f Babylon and immediate vicinity, b u t ten deaths have occurred in th e past twelve months, aud those were e ither persons in ad vanced age or small children. Charles -lonas, a prisoner in the Suffolk County Jail, nttenpted to escape, from that institution Inst week, by working his way . through the sewer pipe. H e w a s captured by the jailor and returned to his cell Tho,barn o f Wm. S. Gaines, o f W o o d b u ry, together with its contents o f hay, grain, and farming implements, were totally destroyed by fire, on Thursday evening last. T h e fire was of intendiary origin. Capt. Isaac Ludlow, a w ealthy a n d respec ted c i'izen of Bridgebampton, fell d ead in liis chair; on Friday last. Capt. Ludlow has been master o f several whale ships sailing from the above place, b u t b a d o f late y e ars retired from m aratim e pursuits. T h e South Bay from Patchogue, east, lias been frozen oversinco W ednesday, the 26th le s t., putting a sudden stop to the oyetering business, which h a s not b e tn so good f o r m any years. Five years ago the Bay froze over o n tlie 1st of December aud did not again open ubtil Spring. si Charles Freeman, a colored m an, was murdered a t Sm ithtown, on T h u rsday evening last bv, Andrew Hammond. Hammond was arrested on Friday and committed to aw a it the action o f tbo Grand J ury. Ham mond, asserts that lie killed Freeman in self defence, and te protect his wife and child. T h e will o f E liza Hoagland is being con tested before the Surrogate, by her sou Benja m in T. Hoagland. The property anioums to some $50,000, which w a s left to various benevolent societies. H e contests it on the ground of m ental incapacity and undue in fluence. ' T h e re is now comfined in tlie Queens Coun ty J a il forty-eight persons, who have been committed for the following offences : three for vagrancy, eleven for assault a d d battery, fifteen f o r being drdnk and disorderly, eight for petit larceny five f o r grand larceny, four for burglary, one for indecent exposuro, and one for murder. T h e State assessment for Queens County be- lng>$625,449 more than the county assessment, the Board o f Supervisors have equalized it b y the following division among the tow n a ; Oyster Bay, $70,000: N o rth Hempstead, $60,- 000 ; Newtown, $55,000 ; Hempstead. $70,- 0 0 0 ; Flushing, $85,000; Long Island City, $92,724, a n d Jam aica, $921,725. L a s t y e a r an act w a s passed authorizing tbe purchase o f certain Queens County turn pikes a n d bridges for $91,000. Bonds to he issued in payment— $41,000 by Newtown and $50,000 by Flushing. T h e roads were purch ased and bends issued, bnt it is reported that the-efhckliolders o f the roads a n d bridges did not receive all the purchase-money. T h e m a tter is exciting m u ch interest.
