THE LO m ISLAND FARMER—.THURSDAY, JULY 6,1871. Our Sehools. For * wcek i*3*” <1“t' village schools and •r ff0rk have been prominently befora-the Iloplean<J a Word concerning them will be 'Ilgjy, At the outset we feel free to say hat our educational facilities are excellent. Jfe feel free to tay also that °ne might travel long way before finding such schools oa we J ye. In character they vary, one from the other, as widely as can well be conceived to be possible, *U being located in the same com munity* Each bears an impress peculiar to itself* Nothing so clearly indicates the sitive character of the leading spirit of each ,, this very fact. rp,u P ublic 8onoot—the poor child’s friend; the hope of the country—we mention Go to onr own Public School when you A© and you see every where discipline. One ;9 continually impressed with the idea that jomewhere there Is a most potent force irre- jistably compelling obedience, attention, work. That school is a subdued one. Wilis have been measured 'and one will' has made itself master.. The discipline is not tyrannical but military. Each pupil feels that tbe path of well-doing is’made easy. Disobedience is jjot only a sin, huh a liurdship. The pupil who disobeys finds that he has taken a long step lrom the atmosphere of the. school before attempting the act. After mature deliberation ,ye conclude that Prof. Hannas’ plan of gov ernment is the best possible for the elements be has to deal with. There is doubt in our Binds as to the possibility of successful inau- gffement oa any other plan. ; In other respects the school is thorougidy alive and go-ahead. Jf there be any new fangled idea, any new device, any thing that seems to be [adapted to (be wants of live Yankee girls or boys, we expect to see it at the Public School. Father Time may take a nap in our. public square or along the highways, but at tho Public School he is kept jbgging along, No danger there of any ones lieiug troubled to keep up with him. Union H a ll Academy.—This is one of the oldest chartered schools of the couutry. One might travel far, too, before finding a scliopl just like it. Whether the spirits of former students hover about it, or those of old time teachers and trustees,' we say not. One thing is certain, there is about the place, either im parted by the old building or the traditions thatcling to it, or by some subtile undefinable force, a savor of old times. If one be under its classic shades and1 enrapport with tlie spirit tUat there pervades all things, he will feel an emotion of contempt for the outer ex citable changing worid aud more or less admi ration for the life of the scholarly recluse, Age, stability, ripeness, are goals that seem worthy of all effort. The building is a little seedy and inconvenient, bnt, some bow or other, it still retnins its dignity as a parson of ihe church who is compelled to wear a thin worn coat. While we greatly need a new building, with new appurtenances and recent improvements, yet in reaching these tliiDgs we would he compelled, to give up Union Hall Academy’s present peculiar character. If we gained, by the change, somewhat of ef ficiency there would be a loss of thatcharmiug atmosphere of poetic hazy repose, strength and ripe richness that now is a characteristic. . U nion H ail S eminars : comes last, but not least. To us this is an anamoly in the way of a school. We have known many but never have seen one like it. The things that strike us as most remarkable therein is, first, the freedom from apparent restraint that is everywhere apparent; The girls and young ladies there attending are mostly from fami- lies’of .culture, and common politeness seems to be the restraining force. The Public School and this are exceedingly far apart in the methods used for securiog order and the degree of precision in executing duty. In Miss Stevens’ Seminary, the pressure of autho rity to compel attefitivenCss is no greater in any case tban that which would be necessary in the home circle in order to succeed in pur suit of learning. The obtaining freedom is accompanied by enthusiasm. We believe that, considering the material, the nearness to home of many of the pupils, and the manner iu which they are allowed, by their parents, to mix in passing excitements, that the degree of enthusiasm generally pervading this school, is veiy high. Now we believe that the rigid discipline of the Public School.is needed for Ihe order, promptness,, exactitude, system, •hedienca, respectfulness on things that the Pupils greatly need to learn. Nothing is there taught which is of more importance. On the other hand we arc inclined toftbe opinion that the system pursued at Union Hall Seminary is “ ost admirable for young girls of good fami lies. Miss Stevens, in applying the home government to a school of from fifty to an hundred pupils, has shown rare tact and origi na’ity. It haa ceased, too, to be an expert, ®®t> and we admire confidently. If the Pisn can bo everywhere made practicable school girls need not sacrifice health for edu ction, hor fibre tip all buoyancy tod elasticity while learning how best to use it and all other. good gifts. p i A N O FORTES. zE>rA.3srb p o e t e s .
