The society has just issued a circular to all the pastors of pburcbes on tbe island to urge their ottentipn'to ihe wiiiits of the Bible Society. It is proposed to re supply tbe entire Island with the Bible nt once., Th? Rev:,L\Viti. B. Reeve of Suffolk county who has the bible-cause* much at heart, iu ■vited the Directors to meet June iStli, at those delightful watering places, QuogpeMud'Wesf- ■ bampton, lie is pastor of tbe Presbyterian church of Wc'ttmiiipton, and has 'chapels at . -Quogue and Speoiik. Atttolig tbe delegates were Mess. Vice-Presidents Bergen, liegeman, Lpttaud Bun, from New Utrecht; Henry S. Dinners, atid Rev. Dr. Wells from Flatbusli: liev., Dr. Stead, t'r«tn ^.storia; l{ev. Mess,' Hid,1 Lumpmun; Cdok'alid Van Slyfe'e,' with tbe Secretary atjd /I'l'easurer tr.oqi, Jamaica. But so big were tne'heai tsof our Bible friends there tbat they could' have eutmaiued three times that number; aud iLeru was quite a scramble t» catch aud bear away tbe delegates to their most hospitable abodes. The atteruovn , meeting was Judd, in Mr. Reeve’s beautiful ciinpet at Quagnc; Wm. R. Post, Esq., of Southampton, ju the chair. The matter of bibid distribution'was discussed by Mess. Lampinau. Hill, Wells, r-tead, On- derdonk and Sayres; 'and it was decided to begiu tbe good work speedily, it was thought best to leave the management of the detads tt) •the local societies. Tuu Treasurer’s Report showed donations to the. amount of $30u since December last. Some delinquent depo-ita lics were reported, tiud those are. to. bp called to acciihht. :,iu.fbe Various (luhStes a- ’-pihTc-ct unity of sentiment prevailed. Iu the evening, at tlie public meeting in tlie Piesbytpriau'clmrch,. at >V estbauvp;ou, Bey. Mr. Cook read a passage of scripture, and spirited addresses were made by Mesa. Van Blyke, Wells and Lampinau. The delegates did not fujl to avail themselves of the natural advantages ofthe place. Ttiey 'Visited the tieaeh, and listened to the rogr of the everlafting surf, arid wondered* at the moust'ous breakers. Oue visit was not enough. The mind is lost in sublime emo tions. The enjoyment was profound. Next day some of tlie delegates were kindly ■taken over to Riverhead by Mess. Reeves and Howell, to see tlie Suffolk Couiity Fair. The ride is about U or ti miles through unvaried sand, across a forest of dwarf pines, On the buds of these the horsefly deposits.its ojjgs in .season for birtli the mxt summer. These woods shelter woouctuieks, foxes an-i deer. The latter feed on deer grass, tlie only gteeu thing that cpyeia the sand, Riverhead is a nourishing place. s -It. has the Fair building, a model lot othyil to In tate. It lias also tbe Court bouse which pi seuts a handsome appearance. There are a great many tasty though pot expensive family residences. The future habitation of Rev. Mr. Cook, (tbe new missionary for iSulfolk county j was pointed put. Theimprovrlnen'S in the way of bridges *nd roads about Westbuiuptoa are deserving of all praise. A spirit of thrift is everywhere visible, and land has tripled and quadrupled • i.i price sine) tbe railroad bus come iu to aid and assist tbe striving energy of tbe fanner. As creatures are not allowed to run at J.urge there is no used of fences on the highway t-> guard tbe crops; so that we rode through fields of unfenced .wheat, clover, corn and potatoes. Fish is one. of the fertilizers. The arable (aud extends down to the.sait, meadows, and Is so clear of stone tbat oue can’t be found to throw at u barking dog. The farms, originally large, are now being cut up utid sold iu sllialler parcels, so luai Westbauipt-m bid* fair to become populous. Our kind host, Mr. CUuijes Howell, was once cumbered with over 2, QUO acres of Jaud, which he is gradually parting with, aud thus t'oing good; which indeed seems to be the great aim of bis life, lortiiougli a Methodist in name, and a live one too, lie culls all Christians, of whatever name, his brethren, aud treats them accord ingly. The burying ground at VVesthampton is on the site ef tbe old church. It has a soldiers monumeut of brown stone, the neat and -chaste hunrtywork. of Mr. Hill of Riverbeud. One of the handsomest stones is of white mar ble, in memory of Major Howell aud ,ifu. Thurc were several very ancient stoues with cherub faces cut in them. Tbe oldest was Jaggar, 1764. _______ . 0. To the Editor of the Jj. I. Farmer: Knowing that you are interested in every thing which will improve the, moral.character of this village, I would call attention to a sub ject, the importance of which ip frequently under-estimated. It is in regard to licensing. As tbe license board of this village will meet next week, (bp time is most opportune for ag itating the subject. There are many reasons for abolishing the traffic .and not one for per mitting' it. What places are those which are purest, happies? It is where no liquor is sold. Limb at Vinelaud, New Jersey, no li quor is sold there; and os*consequence, lust year there was only one arrest, no tires, uo fight?, no rowdies, and the place has gained a high reputation. Jamaica has net yet reached such a standard, hut it may, with no license. Why, it is well known that nine-tenths of all the crime committed is tfabehble to llqubv ; abolish tbe liquor and you abolish the crime. I know of nothing in the wide world which can exert so strong an influence for good,, which will do so milch fbrreliglen, as abolish ing tbe selling of liquor, and it affects eyory one that they should be interested in thla’ mat ter. ,>$j , We have iu the town over'ahundred liquor lollops, nnd a few churches. What a tremen dous power is eocerted against the work of the church. We have now oue hundred, and how long will it be hefojre we will have double tbat number. Let Us stop this evil iu its huge in fancy.. Ah I I.hear some one say, we-can’t gevalong without south few-Saloons! ’Then1 what are we to do in heaven? The rum «hops are foul spots on Cor'Civilization-—relics x>f a barbarous age. Let (hem be abolished. At any rate give us a year’s trial and see what will biitlibresult. If it dCMbarm then wo can soon CSfttedy it, hut if good then we will bd repaid* 1 S. The Maine Democratic State Uonivenlioir met at. Augusta , pn- Thursday Hon.
