The coal field on the West slope o f the Al leghenies, extending from the Monongaliela to the -Big Sandy rivers, Is by far the largest, the richest, and is destined to become the most valuable in the world. In Europe, nearly all. the coal deposits lie far beneath ‘t e 8 FCTiS£“gE !Stand far below-w*. ter level. Deep shafts are sunk at Immense cost, to reach them; the mines are then ven tilated and drained as they are being worked, only after the most astonishing outlays. On the Kannwha and collateral'valleys, the coal crops out of the hill sides in veins from 6 to 12 feet thick, far above water level, and can be dumped into the-ears by the force of grav ity, formerely nommticost, and carried thence to wherever it la needed. A few miles east ward of this immenCe store of coal, on the eastern slope of the Alieganies, are found in- exhaustible deposits pf iron ores of the best qualities. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, now in course of construction from tbe navi gable waters of the James River, to the river navigation of the . Mississippi Valley, the greater part of which is already ip operation, crosses both the iron field and the coal fields, and unites them to the seaboard ou the one hand and the Great West on theolher, Hear ty 7,000 men are employed upon this great Work, and it Will not be many months before the cars will travel Continuously from Mem- ases& n & S B s ttftai- be, on to the navigation of the Atlantic at Richmond. These natural advantages, together with the encouraging rush o f immigration now Budlng its way to Virginia and West Virginia, will give to those Stsiea a yari wcalth and Indus try. The conapletkmof tha CbeMapeake and Ohio Railroad itself will set free a wonderful amount o f latest power, and is to rank as one of the most important works of improvement now In progress. The Loan of the Chesapeake ann Ohio Rail- firm, Flak Ss Hatch, of New York, i t will be seen Is bring steadily absorbed for Investments. These Bonds have several features of conve nience and security not kitberto found com bined.
