They have decided to give a purse of |100, open to all running horses. Mile heats, best 8 in 5, weight for age. There will also be »m inside stake of $15 for second best horse. They have also dcterminnd to give two good trot- ting purses, the particulars of which, to- gether with the running purac, will Ire an- nounced by liantf bill without delay. We learn that in these close times for cash, the offer of our Canton friends bids fair to bring out a good field of horses. Our own townsman, Harmon Lovely, is busy with blankets and sponge, for our Cana- dian friends say he has got to open and shut fast and far to carry off the money. And that's what every body likes. But, we nay to our Canadian friends bring your best blood, for Lovely has a varied sprinkling of that same, and will die game and die hard. One horse of an un- inistakoj>li' Kinggold-look, lias already crossed to our side from Canada, and others will follow. We hear that our Canton friends have got up a new and elegant track, and we may be excused for making the prediction, if the weatiier be good, that it will, at its christening have to note good time very good time. Merry, Co. A., was chosen Chairman, and W. W. Hutton, Sergeant Major, Secretary. The Chairman an- nounced the death of Henry H. Adauis, Second Sergeant of Co. F., who died at Alexandria, Va., on Saturday, the :51st of August, and that the object of the meeting was to give expression of their sympathy and pass resolutions appropriate for the occasion. Whereupon on motion of Sergeant LuFountain.a committee was appointed to report resolutions. The committee consisted of Orderly Sergeants LaFountain, Sandford, and Walling. The following resolutions were adopted : Whereas Henry H. Adams of Co. F.. IHth Regiment, N. Y. S. V.- did in April last offer without reservation his wrvices to assist in enforcing the laws, suppressing the rebellion, and in defending the popular rights and interest of our be- loved country, and, whereas by a mysteri- ous providence it pleased the Almighty God to cut short his life in the midst of his usefulness. A grand rally of the citizens of this village, for a Union meeting, was held on Saturday evening. O. F. Shepard, Esq., was chosen President, arid Dr. Wiiitney, Secretary. Rev. .J. Henry Jones then ad- ' dressed the meeting with much power on the issues of the crisis. J* C. O. Reding tou followed, urging a practical patriot- ism. Rev. S. Gilbert spoke a few words of encouragement. A committee for procuring enlistments for Mr. Jones' com- pany was appointed. Daniel Davis, Wm. C. The Hammond I'nion Agricultural So- ciety will hold its second annual Fair up- on the Society's grounds at Hammond \on Wednesday and Thursday, the 2nd and 3d days of October, 1861. The price of mcinlwrship U 50 cents, and of life membership $•\>. Single cards for entrance, 10 cents. The fair grounds are located in a very delightful place, and on an elevation suf- ficient to afford an extended view of the surrounding landscape scenery, which the rural and cultivated district*, so full of interest, present. Hammond is so situated that it forms a central nucleus in which the towns forming the Agricultural Union can con- veniently meet. There has l>een u com- mendable emulation among the citizens forming the Society to make their annual fair attractive ami inU'resting. Those visiting from a distance will find ample accommodations, and will be greet- ed with kindness and affability by Mr. O. Soper, the proprietor of the Morse House. At Floral Hall, a good and substantial building, upwards of eighty feet long, they will have occnlar demonstration that artistic skill and taste is not confined to '• city belles,\ or \ gents.\ A good Exhibition Court* has been neatly prepared, for the pleasure of those who wish to amuse themselves and others with a show of their well-trained carriage and fancy horses. A peculiar redeeming quality presents itself for consideration : The \ fleecing\ operations in which so many have hud a sad experience will not lie attempted up- on a confiding community. That prac- tice has often been just cause of com- plaint ami prevented many from support- ing an institution, productive of much pleasure, and of great benefit to the agri* cultural interests. The fairs have been so delightful, and have liecome HO jnipular among the peo- ple, that when by cupidity or mismanage- ment they (ail in one place, as by magic power they arise in another. We trust that Hammond I nion Fairs will long continue as the memorial of (he enterprise, politeness, and honesty, of its originators. A MKMIIKK. Hammond, Sept. 2d, 18(11. . j We have the following letter from Mr. Daniel Austin, serving in the Depev- stcr company. H'»th regiment.—EDITOM ADVANCK.] Having just returned from several days\ scouting duty, I take this opportunity to write you. The Captain and eighteen of us were out trying to'capture a Secessionist, in which task we just failed of success. In our pursuit we traveled all over the Mount Yeruon estate, visiting the man- sion und tomb of Washington. There are some good Union men on the estate, and in its vicinity. They own large farms and arc well off. The rel»els 'pressed their hornet* nni\ wagons last Spring, and th*-y had to leave the State to avoid impressment into the Southern army, but when Ellsworth took posses- sion of Alexandria they came back. They are still in considerable dread, how- ever, l>eing threatened every day. They are good people, and desired us to stay and protect them, offering to keep 11 without charge so long as we chose to remain. I got thoroughly recruited while among them. There is very much to be seen here. Some of the Mount, Vernon farms are the >i finest land 1 ever saw; and they can be bought for from thirty to torty dollars per acre. Their owners are Union men, mostly from Pennsylvania, and own no slaves. There lias Wen 11 general improvement in the army since McClellan took com- mand. We arc encamped on the kil of Fort Ellsworth, al>out sixty rods from the fort. It is n very pleasant place. We can look down on the city of Alexandria, and have a fair view of the Potomac for three miles up and down. Except some cases of fever and ague, the health of the regiment is good, and we all live first-rate now. We drill about three and a half hours a day when it is fair weather. Last night we wbnt through a sham fight. There were five regiments engaged. Gen. McCIcllan and lion-. Pres ton King were in the field and were well pleased with the fight. Our regiment is now in the 7th brigade. But I must close, and remain yours truly. THE WEEKLY ADVANCE. TKRM8:-One l.)< ill nr per Your. ADVKKT1HIMJ.
