HOUSE PLAJrTt, OGDENSBURGH, SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 1861. PIANO FORTES * MVUC. Human nature netxla just the influence which cornea from the careful study, and constant watching, of the Iwauty, the curious mechanism, tho. indniUily «livorHi- fieri similarity, tho f*})otlt'88, living purity •of thcfto mrfe«t of God's inuteriul crea- tion. Our flowor-gnrdens Are not always the moat favorable places for such loving study, and, if they wore, we can have them for only bait* the year. What can we do through tho long, New England witter f Green-hourea are an expedient for the wealthy, but they are too expe«- aive and troublesome for the matwee.-— Thtfh tho very extent of A flrparntogreon- houte generally involves the passing over of the care of the plants to a gardener, «nd our kmv goes with the care. For the great majority, a much better, and a far more economical plan, is to adapt a window case, a window, a rgom, or a projection of the dwelling-house to the wants of plant* Many ends are thus gained. Tho cost of preparation is tri- lling ; very Uttlo extra boat is required. Hut the social advantage is, that the plants must necessarily be somewhat limited in number, and therefore each the more precious; they are household pets, and provoke love by their constant presence and attraction. Do visions of a stand of pale, dusty, long-jointed and half naked scrubs come up at the men- tion of houjte-plants ? A sickly child may bo lovely, but a sickly blarrt is Another thing. Unless' suoross in house culture can be more gen- eral than it is at present, in this country, we can hardly speak of plants as an or- nament to the drawing-room, or as likely to enlist enthusiasm in their culture. But the requirements of plants are simple and easily given, so that with trifling cost, both theory and cipuriencc teach that even the most difficult exotics can IKJ grown in our houses with the most perfect success. In many tenements in Paris, limited to one or two upper rooms, the occupants have constructed a recess scarcely large enough for two per- sons to enter at once, but get a little paradise large enough to contain the most exqtrtsito exotics, with plants of most delicate foliage, mimic grotto rock- work, fountains and tfa&caacs—a most successful illusion, and for a moderate expense. If such results arc actually at- tained, and such refining influences can be made a daily experience, is it strange that such culture should become a pas- sion 1 WHEAT A SYMBOL 07 CIVILIZATI0H. It is a logical speech which Crcvecrcnr, the old French traveller, puts in the mouth of the chief of the trifw of the Miss- issais' as por|>ctuatcd by Kltppard, in bis work on the wheat plant: \Do you not see the whites living upon seeds, while we eat flesh ? That flesh requires more than thirty moons to grow up, and is then of- ten scarce ? That oiich of the wonderful seeds that they sow in the earth returns ttr them a hundredfold? The flesh on which we subsist has four logs to escaj>e from us, while we have but two to pursue and capture it. The grain remains where the white men sow it, and grows. With them winter is a period of rost, while with' us it is a period of laborious hunting. For these reasons they have so many children, and live longer than we tlo. I say, therefore, unto every one that will hear me, that before tho cedars of ouf village shall have died down with age, and the mapletrees of the valley shall havf! ceased to give us sugar, the race of the little corn (wheat) sowers will have exterminated the race of flcsheaters, pro- Tided their huntsman do not resolve to become sowers.\ TUB HOUSEHOLD JO URN AX, FIRST0LA888 WBEKLYY PERIODICAL, A FIRST0LA8 WBEKL PERIODICAL got up in the heat ponnihta manner, and edited by tho boat talent which can bo «e< orwl fur tho va- rious d«partm«uU, which oonelst of I\»otrjr, Tales of Fact and Fic- tion, forays, Recipe* and Domestic Kconomy.
