A vote was taken on a motion to adopt these resolutions without anydiseussion of their merits. Several delegates attempted to speak upon the res- olutions, but the President of the Conven- tion refused to recognize them, and insisted on putting the question, which he did' in the affirmative only, and declared th& mo- tion carried, without trying the negative. Eighteen of th e delegates, representing seven towns, then withdrew from the Con- vention, and re-organized by electing Al- bert Town, of Pierpont. • Chairman,' and H. R. A mes, of Potsdam,- Secretary. A Committee o f three, consisting o f George Erwin, of Madrid, R. fiarnum of Potsdam, and D. R. Nichols, of Lawrence, was appointed to draft resolutions for the consideration of the Convention. The Committee reported the following Preamble and Resolutions, which, after discussion, were unanimously adopted : WHEREAS, by the combined action of Silver Grey Whigs of the North, and of Roman Catholics o f the South, the Ameri- can Party a t its National Convention in February last was converted into a pro- slavery party: And Whereas? a large -portion of the Northern delegates in said Convention, after protesting without effect in said Con- vention, refused to yield acquiescence thereto/ but abandoned said Convention and formed a North American Parry.com- biuirTg the two great Northern sentiments —opposition to slavery and opposition to Catholicism : And Whereas, b y th e action of an American County Convention, this da y held, in which we were Delegates, we were compelled to choose whether we would be Northern Freemen or Southern slavery propagantlists<>and in choosing the fortrier the gag rule was most effectually applied to us5*arrd the liberty of speech outraged in such a manner as finds no paiallel, save in the border ruffianism of Kansas: And Whereas, we could not submit to such a flagrant and wanton violation of our rights as delegates in that Convention with- out compromising our principles, and de- grading ourselves as men. and having in consequence thereof, withdrawn from said Convention and organized a North Ameri- can St. Lawrence County Convention, where the liberty of speech shall be held sacred, and the rights of all respected : Therefore, Resolved, That we. the North Ameri> cans of St. Lawrence County, ; n Conven- tion assembled, adhere, amidst all the vicis- situdes through which we are called to pass, with unwavering fidelity to the great principles of the American Party, believ- tbat their final triumph will inure to the prosperity of our whole-country—to the happiness of her sons, and to the stability and permanence of our Republican Insti- tutions—that while we thus adhere to, and cherish American principles, we will not for' their sake be governed by a blind fanatical seal that would overlook and ignore all new issues that may arise, especially, when such issues are fraught with imminent and immediate danger to our liberties, but like true American patriotsj who love their country and are every ready to guard its interests with a vigilant and watchful eye, it shall be our duty, to meet every issue that may arise, and to resist danger from borne as well as from foreign Influence. Resolved, That' the issues involved in the present political campaign are of more immediate* vital and pressing importance than any which have ; befbre been present- ed to the American people-since. the sign- ing of the Declaration of independence— that'the inalienable rights wftB which all men are endowed by their Creator, of \life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,\ have been ruthlessly assailed by tne cofidrts of \tyranny backed and supported by the in- fluence and power of-a Corrupt, wicked and depraved-administration : •>• Toatour vast fertile .domain, instead of being settled by a fjree. and^ppy people, who will glory in the enjoyment of those ' inalienable./ights. is threatened by the ef-' r forts of Border ruffians, to be forever curseck by the foot-prints of Slavery, with the en- joyment of no rights except those vested in the law of tyrants—that \Might makes right !'* That the Northern Free States which f have long since abolished Slavery are threatened to be subdued' andsubjugated by the black power of the South, and with- out, stem resistance we may expect ere long that our ears, herehpn ottr own soil, will besaluted by the crack of the Slave- driver's whip—that the liberty,of speech and, of tba press—those inestimable right? of'freemen have already been wrested from American citizens by J ruffians and bnlliPf. to, accomplish which, bludgeons, bdwie knives and-revolvers have been brought - in- to requisition * - - •' That security of person or property rib longer exist, but murder r$pine and Mood- shed are the common order'of the day-^- towns are sacked, inhaUitAntft tubbed and\; dweljwgsburnedjj indBed v ail!;the.atraoious acts of savage life are being perpetrated under the approving smiles of this disgrace fat administration: \ Resolved, that in y\Qvr of this state of facts, and of the mighty issues to bedeqid- ed by the ne«; election—issues on which bangs the destiny of nur liberties, we. as members of the Aonerican/Parry, and as Amerjcan citizens, feel bound by everytie of patrioti. air by our. love of Freedom ahd'- the right, and by uur hatred ijif oppression and wrong, to fay aside in this contest ajl party prejudices and prepoiKesnotta^-tff; buckle on our armor and go into the con- flict with the firm and unyielding determi- nation that Freedom's banner shall wave in triumfih over ua enemies, and rhat the black power of the South shall be driven nack, ftnd confined within its present consti- tutional Hraits. h< must tvGQi^WfXgejfc'ai a pronounce m an ui8af«T^e^:^|'ak)g.er()ti8'mnn for the North in a: crisWIike the present. Resolved. That Andrew Jackson Don- elsmy&ijandidate for Vice President, as- ^ocjited with JWillaril Fillmore, used tbe following language in a speech made by him. ia which he denounced tbe Missouri Compromise and approved of the Kansas- Nebra«ka bill : ''iSir, I own a hundred slaves, and I glory in the institution.\ Resolved, That wo utterly execrate and abhor such-sentimetffs as the above, and we look, with detestation upon the ma n who uttered'them. Resolved, That we repudiate the nomi- nation of Fillmore and Donelson, as one 'not fit to be made,' and much less fit to be supported by Northern men. Resolved, That in John C. Fremont, we hove a living representative of the pro- gress of the age in which we live; on e who, unaided, except by his own indomi- table will, his unfaltering courage, and his untiring perseverance, has done more to open up and develop the resources of his country than any other living man—one whose life has been spent in advancing American interests and American rights— one who by his influence and exertion, thwarted the designs of the South by caus- ing a free constitution to be framed for California—one who is opposed t o tbe ne- farious course pursued by the present ad- ministration, in removing the landmarks o f Freedom and attempting by fraud and vio- lence to force Slavery into the Free Terri- tories of the United States—one who is in favor of the immediate admission of Kan- sas into the Union as a Free State—one who ever has, and we trust, ever will be equal to an) emergency in which he may be placed. Resolved, That in William EV Johns- ton, we have an early and staunch advo- cate of Americanism, as well as a bold and fearless supporter of Freedom—a man eve- ry way worthy to be associated with the gallant and intrepid Fremont. Resolved. That we approve of the nom- ination of John C. Fremont for President, and William F. Johnston for Vice Presi- dent, and vve hereby adopt and ratify the same, and we will use our best endeavors to elect them to the offices for which they have been nominated. Resolved, That the St. Lawrence Amer- ican has not fairly represented the views of the American party of St- Lawrence Co.unty in relation t o Slavery : That. ..after the adoption in June, 1855. of the odious'12th Section' by the Nation- al Council, its editor opposed any expres- sion of the sentiment of the party in this county, in relation to the question of Slav- ery generally, and that after such'expres- sion was made in opposition to bisfwishes and influence^ he resisted successfully the publication of the same, to the great detri- ment of the American party ot this coun- ty : That immediately after the Philadelphia Convention in February last, without any ratification of the nominees of that conven- tion by the American party of this county, and with the positive knowledge that said nominees were not the choice of the party, the St. Lawrence American raised the Fillmore and Donelson flag, und continues to the present time to advocate tbe election of those gentlemen, in opposition to a large majority of the American party in this county* , Resolved. That while the St. Lawrence- American continues in its present Pro- Slavery Career, and continues ti> advocate the election of Fillmore and Donelson, the South American candidates, we w II not regard it as the organ of the true Ameri- can party in St. Lawrence county, and cannot recommend it to our friends as worthy of their confidence and support. A« County Corresponding Committee was then appointed, and a resolution pass- ed inviting all the papers in this county, and the Albany State Register, to pnblish the proceedings of this Convention.
