FEBRUARY 17, 1972 ications Being Accepted For Camping Applications are now avail- able for young campers to at- tend a one-week camping ses- sion at one of the three envir onmental education camps op- erated by the Department of Environmental Conservation. The camps are run for eight weeks during July and August. Applications may be obtained at .any regional office of the Department. The camp at DeBruce in the Catskills serves 13- and 14- year-old boys from southern Mew York and Long Island; Rushford in southwestern New York serves 13- and 14-year- old boys from the central and western portions of the State; while Lake Colby in the Adiron dacks serves boys and girls, 11 to 13 years of age, from northern and eastern New York State. Campers must be residents of New York and must be spon- sored and selected by an or- tanization. Sponsorship fee is 45 per week and there is a limit of only two campers per organization each year. A cam- per is only eligible to attend for a single week to make the experience available to the max- imum number of youngsters each summer. Organizations are urged to select campers interested in learning more about their en- vironment and willing to apply themselves to a week-long out- door summer school type of camping. Courses offered at the camps include woodlots and wildlife, soils and plants, prin- ciples of ecology, boater and hunter safety training, field! study techniques, fresh water | biology, environmental practi-: ces and related activities. For additional information and application, contact the ne- arest regional office of the De- partment of Environmental Con- servation. Applications are ac- cepted on a first-come, first- served basis. Early application is recommended as each camp i can accommodate only 50 cam-1 pers per week. More than 29,000 children have attended the camp pro- gram since its inception in 1947.
