BRAKEMAS EI‘iKNBEKGEK INJDRKIJ M <’hael Eisenberger oi Matanioras, brakt^man on the Mountain Express., met with a eerious and what came near being a fatal accident, just as his train was about to pull out of the Jerse> Oitv de pot, last Saturday night. It Happened in this wise: Eisenbergtr had started to light the gas jets in the cara. He had lighted the first jet and opened the toilet door, for the purpose of lighting the gas jet there. It hap pen e d , however, that there was some defect in the gas pipes, that supplied the iet, and the gas had leaked out and filled the toilet. The instant that brakeman Eisenberger opem d the door for the purposes stated, the flame from his torch, which he carries for lighting purposes, ignited the gas with which the toilet was filled, and produced an explosion, which literally tore that por tion of the coach to pieces. The force of the expanding gas blew the toilet door shut, and probably saved Eisenberger fr<>m instant death. The small portion ot gas, which escaped fr'm the open door, however, flamed up and badly scorched his f' Ci. His eye brows, beard and a portion of bis hair were burned off, and he suffered pamlul injuries about ll e lace, i'be force of the explosion was so great, that u biakeman, in a coach three car lengtds from the scene of tne acci- dent, was knocked off of his seat. A physician was hastily summoned to attend to Mr. Eisenbtrger’s injuries. Al- thoufiii painiu), they wtre not serious, and 81’er hiv< wounds had been dressed, he was biv/ught home on the Mountain Ex press, and taken to his residence in Mata- moras. Di. When they arrived at the crossing they heard a passenger train coming, but thinking it was a local train and would stop at the station, which is just west of the crossing, paid no attention it it, until it was t'io close upon them to escape.
