I bdieve it to be natural ff-r heus to lay during the whole ye.’- rwithalitt'.einterval of rest a*, the nciod of the moulting - sou, r.nd that, if given roa'toaably c un- fortabh q’lirit rs ao.d prope care and at tention, a ^upply ol’ f ggs may be had dur ing the v.i; ler montb^ as well as at any other season of the 3 ear, • As I have been successful in so manag- iug my fowls as to have such supply for many yt are past, perhaps a few words ar to m y fow m.iy ii ‘t he w U h u U l irtcrest to F a e m e e reiiderfi. ll will be ohst rved I have said may as well be had ounng win ter I do not say as easily, for without e:Ara care and attention few, if any, egg? need be expected during the winter months, but as fre.sh eggs always com mand a high piice at this season they will repay the care and labor expended. My hen house is an inexpensive build ing of ray own construction, twelve feet long by seven feet in width, divided into two apartments, one five feet in length for roosting and the other seven feet square for feeding and nest boxes. It is a leac-to roof seven feet high at lower edge, faces to the south, with large windows in front and is made as warm as can ccnvenientl be done by covering with clap-board; without ceiling or plastering inside. A warmer building would no doubt be better if properly ventilated, as some sav ing of feed might be effected by the in creased warmth in severe weather, but as the results from my flock of twenty hens kept in this building, small as it may seem for that number, were very satisfactory during the past two very hard winters, getting as we did from ten to sixteen eggs daily, when for a week at a time the mer cury was at or below zero every day. I can safely assert that more room or warmth, however desirable, are not abso lute essentiids to at least a measure of suc cess. I attribute my success largely to the manner of feeding and care given, and will give a few simple directions by which anyone may, I believe, have equal suc- I keep the Plymouth Rock fowls which are hardy and good winter layers, though I believe the care has more to do with Eucces than the breed. 1 feed each morn ing during cold weather with warm or rather hot feed, usually a mixture of corn and wheat nuddliniis scalded in sour milk if I have it to use, if not scald with boil ing water, poured upon the feed. I some times vary this with a feeding of corn, wheat or buck wheat roasted in the oven by way of a change. In the afternoon give a feed of whole grain of some kind, taking care to have as great a variety of feed as in convenient. From one to three times -each week I give a'feeding of some kind of green food using for this purpose some kinJ of vegetables as refuse from cabbage, turnips, beets, etc., chopped finely with a chopping knife. Apples and apple parings may also be used in the same way and will be readily eaten if chopped ll'-ely. I believe this questi n of green f ed to be one of great import ance f r pioductkn of eggs in winter, and for Lt UE that are kept in emflnement in summer, a daily feeding of weeds from the garden or something of that sort will be a great help and the amount of such feed they will consume will surprise one who has never teAed it. An occasional feed of scraps of meat is necessary during winter and also in sum mer if fowls are kept in confinement, but ’if any kind of salt meat Is used it should be thoroughly soaked and freshened be fore feeding. Seep them supplied with plenty of shell forming material as pounded bones, oyster shells, etc. (Jive them good dust baths and supply them with clean gravel when thqy have not ac cess to bare giound. Give plenty of good fresh water and burn out nest boxes fre quently and also scorch roosts with a torch made of rags saturated with kerosene to destroy lice. T eeble ABOUT APPLE POMACE. For young stock and working cattle I find it a good feed and big saving of hav; lor cows a good feed lor flesh, but of no use to increase butter or milk. Coming at a time when they naturally shrink, it is hard for me to tell exactly its effect, but do not value it highly. All round, J consider it a valuable food, and as I have tried it against turnips, potatoes and all bay, I can say that with me it is better than either. Now, I read of their making ensilage of it. Will some one who Las succesofu'ly tried it give me their methodE? Would also like Prof. Sanborn’s opinion and analysis. John Gould says that a neighnor of his who puts up about 1,G00 tons annually of corn silage, now pays no attention to the devel. pment of heat. He lets the thickly planted corn stand until partially past the roasting stage. Then he rushes the silo filling and has remarkably good silage. His remark is “ that well-developed, ma ture fodder doesn’t need any tcience to properly preserve it beyond catting into the pits, and putting on a cover.” An- other neighbor, who puts up 400 tons in one pit, puts in one- half of it, then waits a week for it to heat and settle, then fills up, waits another week and puts on the cover and has ideal silage. He uses only mature fodder. In a report of a farmers’ club in one of our American exchanges, a speaker rec ommends scattering over a new ly planted potato field sllcee of potatoes poisoned with Paris green. By this method the potato beetles were frequently entirely destroyed before the newly-planted pota toes appeared above ground. This plan i? at least worth trying.
