Durinir the summer I visited a farmers’s wile in the State of New Jersey who cleared forty dol lars a month raising pigeons. After being there a few days there seemed to me to be no work which carried with it such great advan tages as the raising of pipons. The woman made a comfortable income from that portion of the farm whieii would not yield anything in the way o f crops. There For Bilious and Nervous Disorders, such as Wind and Pain in the Stomach. The potatoes were large and small, equally mixed, and cut to abo it three eyes to a piece, planted one piece to the hill, and 14 inches apart in the row. The fertilizer was mixed by following in the drill, with the hiller closed up. The seed was covered by baud. To each section was applied 1,000 pounds of fertilizer. The sharp drouths of June and July af fected the crop seriously, and I think re duced it one-half. Potatoes were o f small HOLIDAY PRESENTS. Her pigeons seemed perfectly hardy and she informed me that there had never been a disease of any kind among them, and that they were much easier raised th.n poultry and required much less care and feed. The yards were en closed with a wire netting both at the sides and overhead the apertures being just small enough to keep the birds from getting through. The whole care o f that flock devolved on that one woman, and she got through her work among her flock with as much case and rapidity as you or I would get through our housework. Then the outdoor woi'is: was no’ the least beneficial part of it, as she got exercise every day of the year,- that exercise which every woman needs but which few get in their daily routd of bread winning. With such a choice of occupations as are opened to women no one should have no need to ask “what she can do to earn a little money-” PRICKLY COMFREY. In view of the interest excited in Prickly Comfrey as a forage plant, brought out at the recent Farmers’ Institute at Newburgh, the following from a recent bulletin from our State Experiment Sta tion will prove of interest: SYMPHYTUM A8PEEBIMUM. Prickly comfrey : This forage plant, although it bas been for some time before the public, has not until recently attracted much attention. For two years now it has been grown at the Station and yields a good crop of three or four cuttings per season. The plant is propagated from root cuttings and is easily careil for, but needs a well manured, rather moist, soil to yield tne large crops. The plant is very nitrogenous but the leaves are o f a leathery nature and do not seem suited for making into hay. As a forage plant for soiling, when extensive farming is practiced, it is recommended, bat for the general farmer It ia 1*‘9S adapted.
