Foxes, s k n n k s , weasels, black cats a n d other four-footed anim als, roam about her, seeking .-just such food aa the old hen herself or her eggs, yet she so cunningly conceals her habitation as often to raise h e r e n tire brood. A fter a few days she takes th e chicks for th e first tim e into some travelled road, and while there alohg comes a hum a n being. In th e autum n this w o uld send h e r w h irring through the woods, b u t now she stands her grottnd, and in clear tones tells the chickens ju s t w h at to do, and t h e y do it. E v e ry one of them , after listening to the m o ther, ducks its head and skurries away, dividing and hiding. T h e n th e old hen flies off in an opposite direction, drawing, as b e s t she can, all attention to herself.
