Ross has sold his farm, situated near Milanville and containing 121 acres to Hou. T. T. Boyd for $4,250. It is to be occupied by Joseph Boyd. The place is somewhat notable for hav ing been owned and occupied in succession by four men named Moses Thomas. The first Moses Thomas came from Connecti cut and settled upon it nearly a century and a half ago, The tradition is that he was killed by the Indians. He and two Other men were at work in a turnip patch when the red men came upon them. They Started for their fort, but only one, Mr. Winton, reached it alive. Thomas was an Englishman and appears to have been possessed of a spirit of hardihood and ad venture which prompted him to seek that remote outpost of colonial civilization alone. He engaged as an Indian trader and when the other settlers came m of whom we have record, he became one of their leading spirits. The second Moses Thomas, a son of the one mentioned, is said to have been killed in tbe battle of Minisink, near Lacka- Waxen. The third, grandfather of W. V. Ross, died on the farm in 1857 and the fourth in 1859, Mr. Ross has owned and occupied the place for 30 years.—Jnde- Potatoes are rotting badly in many parts of the county. William Pethick and John Knight of South Dyberry think they will have about 2,000 bushels ot rutabagas. Henry Kay ward, who lives at Montrose, has a cow that shows, good training. He says, “ Well, bossy, do you want some feed?” The cow then goes to her knees, the feed is presented and she remains on her kneeff’’till it is consumed. L ake , Oct. 15. — The continued wet Weathlsr has delayed ihost kinds'' of farm work until now. PariLers have just man-, aged to get their buckwheat secured—a fine crop with a l l ; but there is much po tato ground to go over. Some that have quite Wet land kte at a stand about taking the trouble to hunt for any stray sound potatoes that may have escaped the rot. Quite a number that have dug and stored their crop have to go over them again, and in some cases loose half of what they hoped were sound ...... Apples are being gathered and shoved into market at 30 cts., rather premature 1 should think. It is early to rush winter apples on thd mar ket better store them and wait for a rise. Some of the big wheat syndicates might have some money left after getting all the wheat and go for apples ...... There has been the least plowing and seeding done to date than for years. We may have some fine weather in November when fall plowing be done, but late fall plowing does not give the returns that earlier turning does, specially if the ground is qintewet. We find land plowed the last of August or first of September is much more friable and better conditioned for spring planting than if turned late. There seems to be no call for stock yet, exdept horses. They continue to be in demand at full prices, especially young colts ___ Sheep are low, except lambs. There is a decided shift from everything in the stock line to cows and horses.-F.W. D vbbeet , Oct. 10.—In last week’s F armer the correspondent from Lake, this county, wrote “ It is generally con- ; ceded that we have had more than an average of warm weather through Sep tember.” 1 have kept a record for many years of observations tri-daily, using standard thermometers; and mean tem perature of past month, 54.5 degrees, is four and three-tenth degrees below Sep tember average for 22 years, and one of tne coldest f 6r that period. September 1871 was two degrees lower, and September 1881 was 12 degrees higher. Highest temperature was 77, which has often been above 80, and was recorded 95 in 1881; Our August rainfall, 7.46 inches, is more than double the average for that month, for a period of 17 years. September record adds 6.49 inches, average for 19 years a little less than half that amount. Seven and a half inches excess of rain in tfvo months has caused a large share of pota toes to rot, buckwheat to sprout, and with early frosts much com is seriously dam aged, especially stalks for fodder. This crop varies greatly. While some in val leys is almost -worthless, a few places on hills yield very good crops. All of our fall harvesting drags along very slowly, together with other fall work. Many orchards on hills are yitldiug good crops of apples, while in valleys our fruit crops are very light.—Theodore Day. SUSQUEHAMSA COUNTY. Carrington Bros, of Susquehanna, raised from 7^ rods of ground this season, 60 bushels of onions, or at the rate of 1,290 bushels per acre. Their total crop this year was 425 bushels. L a n e s b o b o a n d O ana w ao t a V a l l e y , Oct. 15.—The roads are in a bad condition here, owing to the continual wet weather. ■Bee men report a short honey crop all over this part of the country ---- Very little corn has been husked yet, although the crop is a good one ___ We had a severe wind storm here on Friday last, doing con siderable damage to fencing, also blowing down the shocks of com and buckwheat. Best blood remedy i and cheapest. which were standing in the field......Farm ers are having a bad time to harvest their buckwheat and potatoes on account of the wiet weather, many fields of buck wheat yet unthreshed, and many more of potatoies yet undug ...... Truman Perry has an immense crop of apples in his orchard the present season; he has yarded his dairy in his orchard for the past few years, which accounts for i t ...... Albert Crane has a good crop of apples also. He has cultivated his orchard for the past two years.—Felton. NEW JERSEY. SUSSEX OilUNTY. M. G. Voigt, the creamery man doing buisness at Augusta, left on Oct, 1st, leav ing his creditors in the lurcii for about 88 days milk. His indebtedness for milk alone to customers in Frankford will amount to over $2,000, the heaviest being probably $275. Attachments were issued on Tuesday, but the assets consist only of about 100 milk cans, the other property being all covered with chattel morgates. He took his horse and wagon and some other goods with him. Mr. Patrick Burns has purchased the farm belonging to the estate of the late Augustus Wilson near Deckertown. The property is a desirable one, Mr. Burns will locate there on the first of April next, A novel method of dehorning a bull, and we think hardly in accordance with that in vogue, was practiced by a young man not far from Quarryville. It con sisted of sawing the horns obliquely nearly to the skull bone, and then knocking them off with an axe. Mr. Jetur Fredericks, near Deckertown, has a tree that bears apples which are sweet on one side and sour on the other. On Monday morning of last weekV, H. Crisman of Branchville found a valu able Jersey cow belonging to him in a deep hole in the stream below his mill dam. The form of the bank being such as to prevent her from getting out with out assistance, she had become so thor oughly chilled by her long bath that death resulted the following day.
