It was the mont outlandish. suiumei 'residence that ever was seen, but it w.i-- not without its attractions for the thm homeless Street boys—Nate Waters, To-> Smith and “ Dutchy” Gillam — who livi o Nate Waters was its original discoven r. Being naturally of an enterprising turn of mind, and withal a daring swimmer, lie bad ventured one day fur in among the piles o f an old East River pier, and no ticed some heavy planks spiked to the underside of two orois-beams. It was full high tide, and he succeeded -without much dilliculty in rcachini!; the ed^c of the outermost plauk, and raising hiMf'eif by his aPa« t«i the upp' i'si-'e o f the rough plat orm. Th;‘te w.is barely room for a boy of Nate's size to ait up straight without bum[) ng his head against the wharf plauk thai fonm li the ceilinp; of the apartment ; but what of that ? Here was a discovery indeed. Whai a retreat for himself and his two companions 1 He could only hug his little naked self in delight and ejaculate, “ Bully 1” But he could hear the shouts of his compan ions in the outer air, and knew that he would soon bo missed ; .so he let himself quietly down iut i the water and swam out to the pier head, whence he made his way around the stern of a lumber schooner, and returned as though he had been tak ing a sswim out in the river. The toilet o f the wharf lat is brief and simple, especially in summer. Accord ingly it was not more than forty-five sec onds before our three friends, summoned by a private signal, were on their way to a secluded corner, where Nate announced his discovery, and explained the uses to which it could be put. Of course the first thing to be done was to visit the place in company. Dutchy was the happy possessor of a bit of clothes-line about twenty feet long, and while he went for this, Nate and Tony made their way to the next pier but one above that where they had recently been swimming. Here they were presently joined by Dutchy with a rope. Our three heroes dared not leave their clothes, so they slipped quietly into the water, one by one, with them on, when no one was looking, and dropped down with the tide, that was now running ebb, to Pier K. Nate went first, and was soon joined by his partners. The tide had fallen two or three feet, and the piles showed an unpleasant slimy green sur face, shading into the more comfortable gray or dry wood farther up But the boys were used to such sights, and un hesitatingly followed Nate, who swam boldly away into the gloom. “ Here we be,\ he whispered, after they had crossed under the entire -width of the pier, and farther progress stopped by the southern bulkhead, through the chinks of which the afternoon sun poured slanting rays. The boys held to whatever they could lay hands on, while Nate, after two or three failures, managed to throw their line over a beam, and knot the ends to- geiher near the surface of the water. This done, he climbed easily to the plat form, and was followed by the others, who agreed that nothing could be finer, and it was unanimously voted that tbe en ure movable property of the “ concern” should be moved into the new quarters. As this consisted mainly of bits of burlaps, cast-oil clothing used for bedding, and sundry odds and ends treasured by these little waifs of the great city, it was no ;reat matter to move it, save that the transfer had to be effected with the great est secrecy. Tony’s most jalued possession was a half barrel which had b *en thrown over board from some vessel, and which be had rescued, and in it had thereafter kept bis effects, storage for the tub being per mitted by a good-natured stable-man for whom he did chores in the morning. The value of this tub was evident at once, and after clearing up the “roost” as well as they could with the means at hand, the three boys departed as they came, only they left the water below Pier L, instead o f where they entered it above ier I, That same night, after dark, Tony’s tub was qufetly smuggled down to the river side, and gently lowered into the water. The three spare naked white forms worked like beavers, visible to each other only when a chance gleam of light was reflected from a ripple. At length every thing was successfully hoisted to the roost, a piece of old oiled cloth was care- tally unrolled, and from it were taken candle ends and matches. The tub was turned upside down, and propped so that a lighted candle could stand under it with very little chance of being seen from out side. Then clothes were sorted and put on, and the fruits of the afternoon forag ing expedition were brought out. There was more than enough of dry bread and a few mouthfuls apiece of cold potatoes and meat ; enough, at all events, to fill empty stomachs that were not used to more wholesome fare, and whose owners often went supperless to bed. These young vagabonds were not the worst o f their kind by any means. AH three of them had some regular chores to do in the morning, and generally managed to make up a few cents in the course of the day. The next few days were busy ones. Ways and means for more convenient and GLEANINGS. There i^- good news for the d-tiryonm no loss than the red-nosed man, in the an-1 nouncement by a New York physician- that cheese, if eaten frequently, and in ‘ large quantitie.s will delay reddening of the nasal protuberance. The guarantee of protection ia not extended to excessive whisky-tipplers, as experience shows that the combinalinu of alcohol and cheese by the toper produces a very rich carmine lint. —Prairie Parmer The condition of corn, which has been high since the first report of the season, has not declined materially since the Aug ust report, and now stands at 94.2, with one exception the highe.st figure since 1879 It stood less than one point higher in 188.5, wIiCQ the crop was the largest on record, the product reaching nearly 2,000,- 000,000 bushels on an acreage considerably smaller than that returned for the present crop. This year condition has been very uniform since the first report in .Toly, when it was 93.0 advancing to 95.5 in August, and declining during that month but little over one point to the present standing. The magnificent crop of 1885 was indi cated by an increase in average condi tion between the reports for July and September of one point; this year the ad vance is somewhat greater. In each of the other years since 1878 the returns have shown a falling off in condition as the season advanced, greatest in the years of poor crops .—Department Report. A well-informe 1 correspondent in New York writes that there is little doubt that the apple crop in Niagara county, the banner fruit county of the State, includ ing the cider apple harvest, will foot up over 1,000,000 barrels.JgThe apple evapo rator industry is now in its prime there about, and many thousands of barrels will be used by these concerns A Fe-iv Fom ters.
