He went home to his supper with a look of sullen independence upon his features, but his mother took no noticQ,of it. “ Who is this man that you propose to bring here to tyrannize over Annie and me ?” he asked at length, while they were sitting at the table. “ His name is William Dexter, the pro prietor ot the Oakland mills. Tou may have met him,” said Mrs, Warren looking up with a smile. Joseph gave utterance to a low whistle, whilp his face crimsoned with the reflection tha*t he had been merci lessly sold. He didn’t linger long at the tea table, but went out and sat down under a tree and began to whistle. “ Well, my hoy, did you learn the, name of the man who proposes to come into the family and play tyrant in the household ?” asked Mr. Dexter, on the following morn ing, as Joseph came walking slowly into the mill, without looking up, or speaking to any one. “ Yes,” said Joseph, hanging his head and blushing with embarrassment, while his employer laughed heartily. “ I ’ll take it all back, ” he said sheepishly. “ I’d no idea that it was you.” “ All right,” said Mr. Dexter, “ I hope that the pleasant relations which we have sustained toward each other will not 'be disturbed.” “ I’ve nothing to say, no fault to find at least,” said Joseph who had not recovered from his embafrastoent. Fifteen years passed away, and any one who visited the Oakland mills would no tice an energetic young man who seemed to be the very life and inspiration o f the business, and whose clear head, and thorough understanding o f machinery and conscientious attention , to his employer’s interests, ha've placed him in the highest position o f trust and profit, and made him a useful and respected citizen.
