HUMPHREYS’ Book o f a l l Diseases Cloth & Cold Binding w with Steel Engraviug, P[ _____ MAILED FRES» REST BEFORE BATING. Mr. A. I. Boot, suffering nervous pros tration from mental overwork, fihally found much relief by the easy expedient of taking anap each forenoon or afternoon; and at last he began to observe that when these bits o f r< st came just before meal time he could sit at table without experi encing theformer symiitomBof exhaustion, and digest food with less inconvenience. The remainder of the story we quote in his own words from “ Gleanings in Bee Culture ” : Then it occurred to me that Dr. Salis bury, of Cleveland, Ohio, used to almost insist that I should never eat a meal with out first being rested thoroughly for 30 minutes or half an hour on a lounge or bed. He said it was far better to have a good sleep before eating ; but i f I could not sleep, lie still without sleep. My wife has urged this very point for years; but I have usually been so busy just before mealtime I could not get around to it. For some time back, however, I have been taking just half an-hour’s sleep before dinner and supper; and if any sort of pat ent medicine had ever given me such a lift in the way o f health, it would very likely have been ‘boomed’ about as well as I could ‘boom’ it. The philosophy of it seems to be: If you want a man to do a good piece of work, he should be w ell fed and well rested. Yes, the same is true even of a horse. Well, Dr. S., declared it was a task for a weak constitution to properly digest a mfeal of victuals; and he declared further thktno constitution could digest food properly when it was exhausted and run down to the very last notch; and if anyone atte. npts to get along in that way he will soon t or later find himself broken down entirely.” A ll the heavy laden—tired housewives in particular—are urged to adopt this sim- pie course o f recuperation: You are not saving time by sitting down to your meals''so W tn out that the hand trembles with fatigue that raises the food to your lips. You will get along faster, and accomplish more, by taking fh i s l ^ d o f rest. If it iseems to you im possible, and your are inclined to smile at the idea of a half-hour nap before dinner and supper, then I shall direct my appeals to your husband, your sons and your daughters. As you value the life and the presence of this patient, hard-working mother, make her take that needful rest, just as my wife and children have been making iheusethe good common sense God has ^ven us all.” SH E E P FOR WOOL*AND MUTTON. About ten years ago says J. B. Gorman in the Southern Cultivator I began with a small flock of twenty scrub ewes ahd one thoroughbred Merino buck. I soon num bered one hundred head, graded one-fourth bne-half Merino. I had a strong constitu tion and fine fibre of wool, but I wanted still better ; I desired a larger sheep for mutton, more rapidly growing and earlim* maturing lambs ; wanted more wool, too. The next cross waS with Ootswold, a high grazing sheep adapted to Kentucky and Tennessee—a breed that Col. Richard Peters and other eminent authorities con sidered unfit to breed on the cotton plan tations of middle Georgia. My success has been equally remarkable with this large frame, long comb mutton sheep. I have kept as many as eighty to one hun dred head, 'gmetally selling off in early spring the buck lambs for mutton, and occasionally a buck and small flOCk'lo some neighbor for breeding purposes. Prom twenty head, worth $50, with the buck, I have in ten years sold wool and mutton amounting to five hundred dollars. I have lost but few sheep by dogs, and my flocks have been very healthy, entirely exempt from foot rot and other diseases that these animals are subject to on the Downs of England and in some o f our northwestern States. Undoubtedly the Merino is the sheep to begin with; above all others he shows the greatest vigor o f constitution and adapta bility to climate, food, etc., and by cross ing on the Ootswold or ^uthdowh, you have both wool and mutton, the latter preferable for mutton, but for all purposes I prefer the Ootswold. ’ I feed my sheep in winter, two or three 'months only, on turnips, cotton seed and a little bran, keeping them always fat. I try to have a good bite of rye for the ewes and lambs from about January to February, when lambs should drop. The earlier the lambs appear the better. I assure The Cultivato)' readers that, in my humble judgment, a January lamb is worth two March ones. My sheep and cattle pay enormously in treading land and patches that pay for feeding them during tbe hard part of winter. I have tried to encourage the growing o f wool and mutton |in this section, as there is, I think, nothing more profitable. The Eagle and Phoenix fac tory, of Columbus, Ga., pays high prices for all my wool. COTTONSEED MEAL FOR BUTTER. I have fed cottonseed more or lete for five years and think it a great butter-pro ducing food. But I have found that one or two quarts per day fed to each cow in connection with other grain will invaria bly cause young calves or pigs that eat the Bkimmilk to scour. They cease when I diecontinue the meal. I think a ration disturbing the stomach in such a manner at such a distance from the feeding can not be productive of good to the cow, or of the meat ? I do not know what constitui one who went to see the fam Queen of Barnet reported only farmers’ fare,” another gave tl hustling around for your share of the ■world’s good gifts, and it’s hard work: think of something else.
