Some women love to be dependent and to be compared to clinging vines which are lifted into the sunshine by sturdy oafes; there are others again who scorn depend ency and can stand erect being guided by the light from heaven and true woman hood. The latter clas,s of women love to be producers, atid in olden time found abundant range in manufacturing cloth. The careful reader of the insurance de partment iu the N. T. Ind^endent, must come to the conclusion that the editor is in the pay of the level premium companies. This conclusion is evident from the per sistent and almost venomous opposition it shows to the various co-operative com panies, now engaged in life insurance. It is not an edifying spectacle to thus see a great paper prostitute itself in the inter ests of mammon, especially when it claims to be a religious journal. Co-operative insurance has made it possible for hun dreds of thousands of people in modest circumstances to carry sufficient life insur ance to make their families easy, when liiey could not have procured it at all on the level premium plan. The lard men who do not seem to be in the least squeamish about the condition of the animals from which they make their commodity should vote a medal to our Professor W iley of the Agricultural De partment fame. He has given their lardl a certificate of character, the most com prehensive ever known. We suggest that, the medal be o f leather, hog skin, tanned with the bristles on as a reminder o f its object with a bogus honey comb, hand- oainted on the reverse. Underneath the picture should be the legend “ a scientific pleasantry. ” The bristles would tell their own story and would be singularly appro We hope the bill authorizing the issue of fifteen millions of fractional paper cur rency, now before, the Senate, having passed the House, will become a law. It will he a very great accommodation to the rural pubi c and in short to all who do business requiring small remittances through the mails. There seems to be no good reason why the bill should not be come a law. The carp ersza has practically died out in this part o f the world. In parts of the west where good fish are very scarce, carp culture may prove a desirable adjunct to the farm, but here, where we have so many better fish, no one wants carp. We do not believe they could be sold in our markets. of energy and brains; here is a free range for discovery, improvement and produc tion. Why, we do not even have to pay one cent to be admitted to membership of bee-conventions, being regarded as super ior beings or as ornaments of sufficient value, etc 1 If we compete with the op posite sex, in making pantaloons or in teaching school, we will be obliged to ac cept less remuneration than they com mand ; but who ever heard o f a pound o f honey selling for less bt ciuse it was pro duced by a woman ? No “ vines ” had better embark in the business, or even women of means who know nothing prac tically of bee keeping, but who propose to hire their bees cared for by others, and expect to reap a rich reward from their investment ; but any woman who can make good bread, pkk a goose, milk a cow, or harness a horse, can make bee keeping a success. 1 know a woman who is going out to wash by the day in order to earn enough money to purchase a colony of bees. 1 opine that she will make bee keeping a success, as she is bright, smart and self-reliant. She has the misfortune to have a paralytic husband, and thus ex erts herself to make a comfortable living and to educate a feeble son. All honor to her and other brave women who never shirk the burdens of life. There is noth ing coimected with bee-keeping but what a woman can do as well as a man. She should not be expected to manufacture her bee hives any more than a house keeper to build her own house ; but as hives, frames, and surplus boxes, cm be pur chased so cheaply in the “ fl it,” I know no reason why she cannot learn to nail them together. I should have tried my hand at it long ago, if I had not a partner who is an expert at it. No one should en gage in the business expecting to find a “ bonanza;” but any woman may reasona bly expect fair returns for the time and money expended. One or two colonies is sufficient to commence with ; and if her knowledge increases in like ratio with her bees, all will be smooth sailing and a pros perous voyage .— Farm and. The most serious enemy to roses out of doora is the rose bug in those parts of the country where this insect abounds. The Rural New Yorker annourced three years ago that it had found a remedy in Buhach or pyrelhrum powder. The powder must be fresh, diy and pure. Our first experi ments were made by spraying Buhach water on the bugs confined in tin cans. As this was found effective in destroying them the liquid was sprayed upon all in fested plants using a hand pump, rubber hose and iron tube teiminating with a Cy clone nozzle. About two tablespoonfuls of powder were used to two gallons of water. It is better to wet the powder first with warm water forming a paste, and then mix the paste with the desired quantity o f cold water. In from five to ten minutes after the bugs receive the spray, they begin to fall to the ground where most of them wriggle about until they die, though a certain proportion re cover. During the few days when the bugs appear in greatest numbers it is nec essary to repeat the spraying every day or even twice a day .—Rural New Yorker. Farmers who are disposed to hold grain, potatoes etc , for a higher market should take the important matter of shrinkage into account. Repeated tests have shown that one hundred bushels of corn in the ear, as it comes to the crib ia JJTovember, will shrink about one-fifth if kept until March. Potatoes are subj ect not alone to shrinkage but to rot, and if kept until late spring or early summer, to deteriora tion from sprouting, and s a i l further, to a reduction in the proportion of marketable tubers by the necessary rejection of the smaller ones that might have been sold in autumn. The entire loss may be set down at one-fourth to one-third, or even more, in the case of potatoes kept ftom October to June. Wheat shrinks least o f any prod uct, perhaps, but even wheat shrinks, in six months from August, at least six per ceni Taking interest into consideration and paying no regard to ravages of vermin, which are a pretty certain source of loss, the farmer who holds his produce six months to a year needs to get a consider ably higher price than he might receive at harvest time ,—Farm Life. The executive committee of the State Agricultural Society had a meeting at Al bany, last Wednesday, to decide the ques tion of accepting a single permanent loca tion at Syracuse. In the committee there is substantial agreement in favor of the scheme, nevertheless, consummation is more remote than any of its members sup posed before the meeting. The committee proposed to mortgage the grounds, to be obtained at Syracuse, but an enabling act must be had and it is not forthcoming. Opposition was made by several life mem bers at Albany last week, and with such effect that the bill now in the Senate is not likely to get through. This is the view taken by promoters of the scheme, who find that earnest remonstrance blocks their way. Even at Syracuse interest wanes. Citizens do not care to contribute f 30,000, the sum asked to pay for grounds that will at once be mortgaged for a liko sum, or more, if the scheme succeeds. It will fail. The true friends o f the Society will be able to protect it against its pres ent managers.— Hmhandman. One benefit which the farmer who sur rounds his home premises with artificial groves, -will realize, and which should by no means be lost sight of, is that such groves invite the insect destroying birds, which are the farmers’ best friends, in pro tecting fruit or other crops from the rav ages of destructive insects. It is true that some of them claim a share of the small fruits, but not a larger one we think than they are justly entitled to as remun eration for their work in destroying in sects, Then again .they are so compan ionable that tteir presence on the premises is worth a good deal.—Famers’ Review. Agricultural interests seem to be in good favor with the New York Legislat'zre, now in session. The Senate finance com mittee recommend an increase of the ap- ition for the State Bxperime • ' , -)w $28,000 to $31,000. Thi . , _ .the $15,000 from the government to be used at Cornell, will bring out much valu able work. A committee o f the assembly also reccommend appropriating $10,000 for carrying on farmers’ institutes in place of .$6 000 for the past year. — Maine Farmer. •W o u ld Y o n B e lie v e The proprietor of Ki mp’s Bal am gives thousands of bottles a-w’ay yearly ?
