Tiie PearsfiU farm of sixty-two acres, near Monroe, sold at auction recently for $5 .’500. Mr J. H. Bush, of Greenwood, (Arden,) was the purchaser. Jehial Gray will work the farm of Hmith k Hoyt near Craigville this year. Floyd Ball and wife move upon the Taylor farm near Monroe April 1st. MiDDLKnoi’E. — Daniel H. Merritt re ceived, last week, from Chester county, Pa., a trio of Chester White hogs, fine specimens, weighing about l.'iO pounds each. They were shipped by Adams’ Ex- presB and sent from New York City to Newburgh by way of Hartford, Conn., making the express charges $13 for the roundabout trip. Some of the vineyards o f Delaware are found to be badly winter-killed, particu larly those that bore heavy crops last year. The owners are anxious now to know whether the vines were grown from Dela ware cuttings or budded on some other va riety, as the value of vines that will now come from the roots will depend entirely on what they were originally grown from. There will be no plowing for oats in Orange county in March, 1888. scLUVAN C ounty . At the recent sale o f Bryon M. Linda- ley’s stock and farm tools, his Partridge Cochin fowls were sold at $9.00 for the first trio of heavy birds, and a breeding pen for $14.75, The lucky gurchas^r was I). A. Carter & Son of Utica. Wash. Baifey bought the pen of White Leghorns for $4.80. Cows brought $34 50. When the O. & W. milk train resumed its regular tripe, after the great blizzard, 65 cans of milk deemed too old for the New York market were put off the train at Parksville. The milk was from the creamery o f C. H. 0. Beakes, Sidney Cen tre, and had been on the train all the time it was detained by the snow blockade. It is rumored that a valuable lead mine has been discovered somewhere between Oallicoon and Hankins. OHENANGO COUNTY. Mr. E. Pason purchased a small farm in the town o f Smyrna during last season, and moved thereon in the fall. He has rented his farm for the coming season and moved into North Norwich on account of poor health. Mr. Lawson Dalrymple is the owner of a large and very intelligent Newfoundland dog. A. short tin e ago while a lot o f men were shoveling out the road, Mr. Dalrvm* pie sent the dog to the house for a pail of drink, he carrying it in his mouth a dis tance of nearly half a mile. He would occasionally set it down very carefully to rest. The pail was an eight quart one. A farm of 106 acres is advertised for sale near Chenango Lake, in the town of New Berlin. Price $0,500. Mr. W. H. Brookins has rented and moved onto the F. Bissell farm across the river from Norwich in the town of North Norwich. The farm was vacated by Robert Hannis who has moved on a large farm in Oneonta. We had occasion to call at the Furman farm situated in the town of North Nor wich one day last week. The farm is conducted 1^. R. C. Quinn, who is also supervisor of the town. Any one can see at a glance that Mr. Quinn takes pride in showing his dairy of Holstein stock. He has a fine herd of cows about fifteen of which are with calf. Some of his calves he prices quite highly, the heifer calves from $10 to $15 a head. He pointed to one with the remark “ I would not take $15 for that heifer if anyone would lay it in my hand now,” which amount most people would think quite a price to pay for a calf a few days old. A registered Holstein bull is also kept on the farm for service. He has been kept on the farm for seven years past. He has some very fine looking calvea It was given out by his owner when he was brought on the farm .that all of his calves that were not black and white from any cow, the owner of the cow need not pay for service. Mr. Quinn is now busy get ting up a large wood pile. He is undoubt edly o f the belief that a good large wood pile near by is a good thing to keep his wife good natured. A good mapy farmers throughout the county anticipate using considerable phos phate or fertilizer during the present sea son. Many have nearly come to the con clusion that phosphate is a considerable better fertilizer for potatoes than manure, as manure for potatoes has quite a ten dency to rot the crop in most seasons, also phosphate seems to prevent scab or worm eaten potatoes. DELAWARE COUNTY. Howell Bros, creamery at DeLancy was burned on Sunday night March, 17th with nearly all its contents, which was consid erable on account of the snow blockade. They were receiving 60 cans of milk per day. The foreman, Mr. Bouron, lost his household goods, which were stored in the second story. The ice house was saved, and it is hoped the creamery will soon be rebuilt. M. C. McNaugh o f Delaney brought a fine lot o f horses from Ann Arbor, Mich. They are mostly heavy horses and among them several pairs of Clydesdales. The farm recently purchased by Joseph Miles at Sidney had been in the Johnston family 113 years. Platt Reed, of Sidney, has bought W. F. Bums’ farm on Palmar Hill. Ooneld- eration $3,100. A. H, Sewell has bought E. R. Gray’s farm at the head of Beers’ brook. A creamery is being talked of at Kipp- villo, Joi-eph Fitcb, of West Brook, has rented Mrs. Butlers place and took posses- siou the 20th o f the mouth. M e . Colwell will take charge of the Franklin creamery on the first o f April. Mr. Charles B Bassett, of Walton, Del aware Co., N. y . , has recently purchased ofM . W. Dunham, Wayne, HI,, a hand some young Percheron stallion, which will be at the service o f farmers $20 to ensure. The hoi.se is black, 10 hands h’gb, weighs l,550i pounds. Name Saturne 7103 (6336) foaled Feb. 13th, 1883, imported in 1887. He is a thoroughbred with a long pedigree and will doubtless be largely used in Dela ware county. OT8KGO COUNTY. Potatoes are abundant aud of good qual ity at Oneonta and sell in shipping lots at 65 cents per bushel. A creamery is being built at Roseboom. The Artemus Welch farm in West Bur lington was sold at foreclosure sale recently for $4 950, the purchaser being O. M. ParKcr. George Pierson has moved on the David Denning farm in Edmeston. B. W. Hawver has moved onto the farm near Bdson Corners. John Sawyer has purchased Ogden El- dredge’s farm in,Cherry Valley on fore closure o f a mortgage. N E W JERSEY. SUSSEX^ COUNTY. Walter R. Case, of Lafayette, has four Jersey cows, three of them graded and one registered, from wjhich he has made 1,207 pounds of butter during the year ending last week,\ besides using the milk needed for a family o f three. OUR EXPERIM E N T STATION. The season for out-of-door work at the Experiment Stationisnear. Thepresentdi- rector,Dr. Collier,is moat earnestly desirous that good work^f former years be carried to successful completion, and that the Sta tion be fully identified with agriculture. What better aid can he have after full employment of his own resources than the co-operation of farmers advanced in practical farming, yet seeking new light ? To all such visitors h e will extend most hearty welcome as, in fact, to all who honor the Station by their presence any day in the year. The work of Dr. Sturtevant who resigned last December, will not be forgotten audit is hoped—even believed,—that in Dr. Collier he has a capable and most worthy successor.—H«g. handrmn, Man wants b u t little h ere below. B u t wants th a t little strong. This IS especiallyitrue of a purge. The average man or womauidoes not precisely hanker for it, as a rule, but when taken, wishes it to be prompt, sure and effective.
