/ The far t is that, in saying Mr. Hart's lock is no improvement upon the kinds in use be- fore it, we said not one half that the facts would warrant. Our gunsmiths and our hunters have both examined and tried Mr. Hart's lock, and they uniformly pronounce it by far the most worthless of the whole nine different kinds with which they are ac- quainted. They consider the invention one without merit; and the undue exertions that have been made to weigh names against experi- ence, and thus reudcr it popular, are the best possible evidence that they are not mistaken. The matter is not one in which wc feel any prcsonal interest, for both men are strangers to us : but the preference we have expressed for Mr- Davis' invention is fully warranted by its actual merit, and will be continued by all practical men. mtsftetot FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 1527. was driven back; and succeeded i * entering the creek, bj rain, jad search is now mak- ing for them. The editor of the Buffalo Patriot is out up- on us this week, in true percussion style, for the notice we took of his remarks respect- ing Mr. Harts gun lock. He disposes of me certificates of Messrs. Brown and Ma- comb, ice. in a very summary way, by at- tempting to ridicule the idea that a high of- fice should qualify a man to judge of so cu- rious a piece of mechanism as a gun lock ; and then he brings forward his Buffalo hunt- ers and gun smiths, who he says have all ex- amined and used Mi. ILul's lock and uni- formly pronounce it the most worthless of nine different kiuds with which they are ac- quainted. Now, this is jn fact stepping over all Hounds of pi\>'nab#ty, and will <xo well with the boy's story ot 'tbejCce hundred cuts. published in the same paper. To believe Ibis, we mif3t suppose the commanding gen- eral of the United States' army, with many other officers who have recommended Mr. Hart's lock, and who must of necessity un- derstand the use of lire arms, are all incapa- ble of judging of the merits of a gun lock. As a farther ei ideoee tint Mr. Hart's inven- tion has some merit, we would jest state that Mr. Hart has, within a few days, sold pat- nuts for his lock to the amount of more than a thousand dollars; and although he keeps IU constant employ live or six workmen, he is scarcely able to supply the call for rifles. Frtdonia G&zctte. ENGLAND The debate in the house of commons, at the time when the new min- isters took their seats, is interesting; but it is too long to admit of our publishing even a sketch of it. The ministers who have re- signed their places came out strongly in op- position to the new administration, ami ex- plained at length their motive in withdraw- ing; which is predicated principally upon the Catholick question. Mr. Canning, iu return, has explained his views—he sajs that Catholick emancipation is not to be made a cabinet question ; that his views on the subject remain unchanged, but that the simple circumstance of his being prime min- ister is all that this question »vill gain by his elevation—that all that ministers do in rela- tion to it is to be done in their individual ca- pacity.
