The celebration, spon- sored by the South Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, will include a craft fair with the theme of wood and wood-re- lated items, demonstrations of lumbering skills, tree planting ceremonies, a'Tree Scavenger Hunt', a children's art contest and show, a pho- tography contest and show, museum tours, food, Tun, and entertainment Several special events, in honor of trees and the importance of them to 'our quality of life and well-being', are planned for the celebration. The community of Adams has some special reasons for making this Arbor Day celebration bigger and bet- ter. This year marks the second year that the village has celebrated Arbor Day. The organizers of last year's Arbor Day celebration re- ceived such enthusiasm and supportfrom local business- es and citizens, that they decided to initiate Arbor Day as an annual festival. Adams proudly claims J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Ar- bor Day. Finally, this year also marks the 100th an- niversary of Arbor Day in New York State. Arbor Day '88 in Adams promises to be a very special event. ;. J. Morton ap- preciated the civilizing in- fluence the planting of trees would have for the raw settle- ments on the treeless prairie, perhaps reminiscing about the lush vegetation of his home in Adams. In 1872, he offered a resolution to the Nebraska State Board that April 10, 1872, \be es- pecially set apart and conse- crated for tree-planting in the state of Nebraska and that the state board name it 'Arbor Day*. Nebraskans em- braced the idea with enthu- siasm and planted over a mil- lion trees on that first Arbor Day. The observance of Ar- bor Day spread rapidly and today it is celebrated in all fifty states and in many foreign countries. The State of New York has observed the holiday since 1888 and has established the last Fri- day in April as the state's official Arbor Day. What does Arbor Day mean to us? It is a day for communities, civic organiza- tions, neighborhood groups, schools, and families to plant trees and give formal recognition to the contri- bution trees make to our lives. The rights of spring is distinctively American, root- ed as it is in our national heritage. Our pioneer fore- bears settled this great land and in doing so expressed their faith in the future by planting trees on the village greens, parks, and streets of their newly founded com- munities. Through the years, the trees they planted have added great beauty and charm to the American Land- scape. The State of New York has taken special interest in the Adams' Arbor Day Celebra- tion. The New York State De- partment of Environmental Conservation has assigned Mr. James Field, Senior Forester, to assist organi- zers in the promotion of the event. According to Field, several wood-related pro- ducts, industries and non- profit organizations will dis- play and demonstrate their products at the festival. The exhibitors will include: the Tree Farms Program, a group sponsored by the Forest In- dustry Council; the Empire State Forest Products Asso- ciation, the Regional Forest Practice Board, Project Learn- ing Tree, and the New York State Department of Envi- ronmental Conservation. Several other organizations are expected to participate as well. The N.Y.S. Depart- ment of Environmental Con- servation has pledged to con- with information concern- ing the health of the street trees resulting in the de- velopment of future pro- grams after Arbor Day. One such program may result in the village's designation as a 'Tree City' in 1989? The New York State Nur- serymen's Association rec- ognizes the importance of Arbor Day. This year as part of the centennial celebration in New York, the association will be encouraging people to plant a tree in a park, along an avenue, and in school yards of towns across New York State. The organi- zation will donate 12-15 trees, balled and wrapped, two to three inches in diam- eter, ready for planting. The trees will be used in a special tree planting ceremony at Morton Park on Arbor Drive in Adams. The New York State Arbor Day Committee, a clearing- house for community Arbor Day Activities and a direc- tory for Arbor Day Organiza- tions, has donated several hundred Centennial Arbor Day Posters to the South Jef- ferson Chamber of Com- merce in Adams for distribu- tion to local schools, libraries, government agen- cies, and non-profit organi- zations. The Arbor Day Festival in Adams begins with a Lum- berman's Breakfast spon- sored by the Adams Rotary Club* A craft fair and street festival, headquartered at the Six-Town Meeting House, will be held on East Church Street The festival opening ceremonies will in- clude a performance by the 10th Mountain Diyision Band of Fort Drum followed by a tree planting ceremony at the Six-Town Meeting House. The N.Y.S. Depart- ment of Environmental Con- servation will sponsor a \Tree Scavenger Hunt*. The U.S. Department of Agricul- ture's ^Woodsy the Owl' and the N.Y.S. Department of En- vironmental Conservation's 'Smokey Bear' will make special appearances at the celebration. In addition to the wood products exhibits, the meeting house will host a Children's Art Show and contest, sponsored by the Adams VFW and a Photog- raphy Show and Contest, sponsored by Severance Photo of Watertown and Kin- ney Drugs of Adams. Special tours of the South Jefferson Historical Society will be given throughout the day. The Historical Society will present a museum documen- tation of the history of the Village of Adams and the South Jefferson area. Sev- eral tree planting cere- monies are planned for the week of April 23-29. « East Church Street will be transformed into a festival in.celebration of trees. Face painting and 'Giant Bubble Blowing' activities should set this festival apart from others. Local churches and non-profit organizations are planning several activities involving commemorative gift items and food.
