Page 20 - Banner Times - Monday, March 28,1988 \ Religious Viewpoint By Clyde Dupin \THE POLLUTED TV AND RADIO AIRWAVES\ Vill anything go under the new federal Communica- tion Commission's ruling on adul. programming? On Novembe. 24.1987, the FCC issued a ru'ing on obscene and indeceit television shows. Accoro. ng to the new guidelines, late .nght televi- sion and radio n.ay broad- cast indecent language be- tween midnight and 6:00 a.m. when children are least likely to be listening. The National Federation for Decency, headed by United Methodist minister, Don Wildmon, plans to chal- lenge the illegal regulations. He said federal law calls for a $10,000 fine, and up to two years in jail, for uttering obscene, indecent, or pro- fane language over the air- waves. The law pertaining to in- decent programming was established by Congress and the President and has been upheld by the Supreme Court By their action, the FCC is declaring the law null and void, a power they do not have. At the present time, Wildmon is looking into possibility of legal action against the FCC. No\v is the time for all good citizens, and Christians in particular, to object to this late-night obscenity. If this evil is permitted to fill the late night airwaves, it will eventually move to early hours. There are two things we can do. The churches, PTA's and civic clubs should object when local stations become vulgar, indecent, and use profane language at any hour. You can, also, complain to the Federal Communication Commis- sion, Mass Media Bureau, Enforcement Division, Room 8210, 1919 M St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20554.
