(William French Smith, U.S. Attorney General, 1983). FACT About half the couples in this country have experienced violence in an intimate relationship. Twenty five percent of the couples in this country are estimated to be in violent relationships, that is, violence occurs more than once over a period of time. FACT Women who are battered may be verbally abused, slapped, kicked, punched, thrown around, or knifed. They may have minor injuries or they may have serious injuries or they may have permanent injuries or they may be killed. Women have suffered broken ribs, concussions, premanent brain injuries, hearing loss, and miscarriages as a result of beatings. FACT Thirty percent of the female homicide victims are killed by their husbands or boyfriends. (FBI uniform crime reports, 1982) FACT Twenty-three percent of the police officers killed in the line of duty were attempting to halt family fights. (FBI, 1974) FACT The number of wife-abuse cases reported in a working class, black neighborhood in New York was roughly the same as the number reported in a white, upper - middle class, working class area in Connecticut with approximately the same population.
