Last year more than one million young people and teachers in thousands of schools representing all 50 states and Puerto Rico participated in this national exercise program, conducted to benefit the American Heart Association. The event, organized by elementary physical education teacher Ellen Stockwell, will occur March 21 in the Sandy Creek High School gym from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Students in grades First - Five are eligible to participate by returning permission slips, sent home with the students, to Miss Stockwell. Further in- formation can be obtained by contacting the school. Jump Rope For Heart is a special event conducted by school physical education teachers and students who organize the competition. The six-member teams jump rope for a maximum of three hours. Pledges collected from sponsors are contributed to local American Heart Association research, education, and community service programs. The kids will be asking for pledges for each minute their teams jump. Jumping rope is a great physical exercise and Jump Rope For Heart is a great way to raise money for the American Heart Association. So, pledge generously when the kids call! By encouraging the par- ticipation of young people, the event promotes AAH- PERD's message of the lifelong benefits of regular physical exercise. The event also demonstrates how teamwork can be used to reach a common goal as students and teachers work together. AAHPED is a 50,000 - member voluntary educational organization of health and physical education teachers, coaches and athletic directors, and personnel in safety, recreation, leisure services, and dance. Schools from the elementary to the college level will be participating in Jump Rope For Heart across the country. Remember, the event at Sandy Creek will be March 21! Child Abuse Booklet Available Do you know a child between 10 and 14 years old who you suspect may be being physically, sexually or emotionally abused or neglected, but you don't know what to do about it? You might give that child a copy of a booklet just published by Cornell University's Family Life Development Center, \What's a Kid to do about Child Abuse?\ Written and designed specifically for children, the booklet features many very personal quotes from children help readers identify maltreatment situations. The booklet is designed to encourage children to take action to get help in resolving problems rather than growing up accepting them. Written by Margo Hittleiran for Cornell University's Human Development and Family Studies Department in the New York State College of Human Ecology, the 41-page booklet talks about what child abuse is, why it happens and what a child can do about it if they are being abused or know someone who is being abused. Copies of \What's a Kid to do about Child Abuse?\ are available from the Cornell University Distribution Center, 7 Research Park, Ithaca, NY 14850.
