Page-8-Banner Times Monday, February 23, 1987 ^Fishing Lines & Lures By Old Hickory 'Try-It' Race Results My first meeting this week was the February meeting of the Oswego County Federation of Sportsmens Clubs at Mexico BOCES. I was a little late arriving at this meeting as I had another meeting of the directors of ELOSTA the same night. This one had been postponed from the night before due to a blizzard and I had to get the material for the ELOSTA booth at the Outdoor Sports Expo delivered that night. Sometimes it is kind of difficult to make two meetings the same night even if they are almost in the same town. Our first guest was Bob Goty, of the DEC wildlife program. His report follows: There is a new booklet nut called the Manual of Ringnecked pheasants. Presumably this is another one promoting the growth of the original wild pheasants, as that is the only way we are ever going to get a self- sustaining pheasant population again. The annual Deer Forum is March 13, 14 and IS at Canton, at the ATC building. This is down the street, the first right after you cross the bridge. The Return a Gift to Wildlife Fund is supplying educational posters again this year We ordered thirty sets for our members to distribute. Trapping season for beaver has been extended from February 16-March 1 for units 20,21 and 24. Applications must be in by April 1 for the pheasant day old chick program. There will be an experimental squirrel season for units 10-28 starting September 1. Units 24 and 26 will have a spring turkey hunt. Depending on the buck take in western Oswego County, a doe season may be implemented in a very limited amount in the future. There were some other season and trapping dates but this information didn't seem to be quite clear at the time, so I suggest anyone interested contact the DEC. Les Wedge, of fisheries region 7, was our next guest, he gave us the proposals for the new lake trout regulations by the DEC. They have three proposals and the first one is the one they prefer. This is open season from January 1 to September 30 with possession of fish between 25 and 30 inches prohibited. This would return the spawning fish back to the water, but still with a possession limit of three fish. The charter boat associations influence can very plainly be seen oh this one. These dates could just as well be March 1 to September 1. A group from the DEC went ice fishing to Fair Haven to get some northern pike for the Norlunge program, and they did pretty well by cat- ching over 20 fish and about IS for the Oneida hatchery. We finally got an overlay of the Barnes Corners deer yard on the map of the proposed Rodman landfill, and as we suspected, this landfill lays right in the deer yard. The federation wrote the DEC on the Suffolk County action of banning trapping in the county. As yet, they do not have that authority, however there has been a bill introduced which would give counties this in the future. Transportation by bus has been arranged for the sportsman's march on Albany on March 18 to Leave from the Syracuse area. Those interested in going, contact Hank Cosselman at Oswego, RD 1, The times set up in Albany are 9:30 - 12:45 for legislative visitations. The bus will leave Albany at 1:45. The more people we have, the better the showing, Ladies are encouraged to par- ticipate, if we can't convince the legislators just how valuable economically hunting, fishing and trapping is to the state this time, we have only license fee increases to fall back on. Buttons will be provided for SI each. All arrangements should be made and more information will be available at the March meeting. I may not be able to cover this meeting, as right now my plans are to be in Springfield, Mass. at the Outdoor Expo there the 4th and 5th of March. I will get the highlights of the meeting, especially the current plans and information concerning the sportsman's march on Albany the 18th. I do expect to be here for that. We need large delegations to visit our various legislators, although each group will have one or two spokesman to express the views of the group. With delegations from each region of the DEC, we hope to have several thousand people to represent our cause on the 18. The Federation banquet will be April 4 at t'ae Hastings Fire Hall, and Jus year the number of tickets is very limited, so any .me intereested has to act early. The en- tertainment will be a very interesting video cassette of Lou Depala fooling an elk with a decoy. The kids for camp names were drawn and as near as I could gather, all those entered will go except the two alternates, Bouchard and Barker. These will go, only if one of the others drawn cannot go. There has been one meeting of introducton of teachers to the Project Wild Program, Twenty-two teachers were present. There will be another meeting in April. Wayne Duell is in charge of this program for the Federation. Contact him for further information on the subject. See you on the ice or the river. The Fourth Annual 17KKey Bank \Try-It\ cross country ski race held on February 14, attracted 132 skiers from New Jersey, Ohio, Penn- sylvania, Vermont and all over New York State. VtF Linoleum \ kffenon St, PuWa I Oswego County Trappers Association The February meeting of the Oswego County Trappers Association was called to order by President Robert Fallows with 46 members present. A draft letter was passed out to all present to help in writing our legislatures in the fight for trapping rights. It was reported that Sulff oik County down by New York City has banned all trapping in the county instead of leaving it to the department of Environmental Con- servation. It is just the first step of the anti's to get their foot in the door. Al Craig reported on having called the Attorney General's Office to protest this move and see if they are going to sue the county. It was also reported that the New York State Trappers Association, Wildlife Legislative Fund of America and many more are joining the fight. Our organization also sent a letter to the Ontario Trappers Association, thanking them for their large donation to the NYS Trappers. On this same line, letters and reports read from the National Trappers Association, Fur-Fish-Game, Fur Takers of America and New York State Trappers Association. Wayne Duell of the Oswego County Federation of Sportsmen was present and spoke. The Trappers gave him permission to use our chapter's name in contacting the New York State Trappers and others. It was reported Beaver Season in Unit 28 expects to be extended two weeks. Jim Bulsom reported on fur prices. Henry Cosilmon also reported on the work of the Conservation Council in various aspects of all the movements going on in Albany and New York. He also reported that Sportsmen are going to march on Albany March 18 to ask for help to overcome the 5.7 million dollar deficit in the budget for Conservation. At the present it looks like no season changes are in the future for next fall, on trapping. Our organization has sent a petition to Governor Cuomo on \Water For Life\ campaign. It was also reported to be on the look out for an organization named \CASH\. This stands foi Cancel All Sports Hunting\ in New York State and others. Their goal is to have it accomplished in five years. Trap winners were E. Kondratowicz, S. Roberts, M. Cosilmon, S. Mooney, J, Kimber 2, G. Parkhurst, J. Darling, B. Bolster and W. Duell. Albeit J.
