Page-10-Banner Times Monday, February 23, 1987 Cheerleaders Bring Home Honors To Establish Material Development Center The Sandy Creek Basketball Cheerleaders recently participated in the Frontier League Cheerleading competition at Thousand Islands Central School. \The Cheerleaders performed well, \said Coach Ellen Stockwell, \with the JVsquad coming home with fourth-place honors.\ The JV squad includes, front: Cara Gennario, Stacia Pratt, Jamie Larmon. STEP Program Offered Interested in increasing the mutual respect between you and your elementary-aged school children? Want to open the communication channels and enjoy one another more? STEP is being offered by the Home Economics Program of Oswego County Cooperative Extension in conjunction with PA YE (Parents Affecting Youth Education) at the Sandy Creek Elementary School on Salisbury Street from 7-9 p.m. beginning Monday, March 2 and ending Monday, April 20. The series will be facilitated by Susan Lojewski for 20 families. Cost for the eight week parenting program is $15. plus $7. for the Parent's Handbook folks get to keep after the series end. Registration deadline for the series is February 25. Free babysitting is available to those who request it at the time of registration. According to Oswego County Cooperative Extension Home Economics Program Parent Educator, Ellie Peavey, STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) deals with typical chfJlenges faced by most parent a. Participants will be introduced to a practical vay of un- derstanding children's behavior add misbehavior. Topics fo. discussion will include what motivates children, now to help them become more cooperative and responsible, how to understand children's emotions, how to talk so kids will listen and how to en- courage them so that they will feel good about themselves and will feel more able to cope with the demands of everyday life. STUDENTS' CORNER y The comma is the most frequently used punctuation mark in English and indicates a slight separation in ideas of construction. There are about 75 regular school days left. Seniors are keeping good track of this number. The National Honor Society Talent Show auditions are scheduled for February 25 (Wednesday) at 3-5 p.m. in the Lura Sharp elementary school. They'll also be- Thursday, February 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. If you would like to a audition but cannot make these times, call Robin Warren at 298-2975 for special arrangements. There will be a $5.00 audition fee. The NHS is also selling raffle tickets for $1.00 each. There will be drawings for prizes at the talent show. The prizes are solicited by members 6f the society. Some of them are gift certificates for businesses in the village or money prizes. The Nashville bouna select group are sponsoring a faculty vs. WSGO radio station basketball game. This game will be March 7 at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. This should be quite an experience seeing teachers like Mrs. Zenther, Miss Damon or Mr. Riley in shorts. The monies raised from this event will add to the profit needed to be made to go to Nashville in April. The cast of this year's drama \Up The Down Staircase\ have moved on and are progessing quite well, now that they are out of the books. The members of the faculty in this play are: Dr. Maxwell Clarke (Mike Deaton); Sylvia Barrett (Karen Robison); Beatrice Schachter (Martha Leib); Paul Barringer (Todd Stowell); J.J. McHabe (Char Aaserud); Ella Friedenberg (Angie Felio); Frances Egan (Kelly LaDuc); Charlotte Wolf (Deb Trust); Samuel Bester (Jeff Snyder); and Sadie Finch (Sandy Clark). Watch for upcoming sec- tional basketball games, since both our Girls' and Boys' Varsity ball teams made sectionals. The girls played February 21 at 6 p.m. at APW. The guys will olay home, February 25 at 8 p.m. Planning for the Material Center Room, to be located in the Pulaski Elementary School, are, from left to right: Pulaski School Superintendent Warren Leib; Oswego County Teacher Center Coordinator Gail Wattier; and Pulaski Elementary Principal Francis Bellardini. Pulaski School district is working very closely with the Oswego County Teacher Center to establish a pilot Materials Development Center, to be located in the Pulaski Elementary School. The center will be staffed by a part-time Materials Specialist and interested parents, community volunteers, and classroom teachers. The objective of the center will be to develop bulletin boards and/or game learning materials requested by Oswego County Teacher Center teachers to reinforce skills taught in the classroom, to develop alternative methods for children to learn, and to allow teachers more time for staff development activities. SCCS Vocalist Accepted In Honor Group Kelley Brown Kelley Brown of Sandy Creek Central School recently received notification of her acceptance into the 1987 Music Educators National Conference Eastern Division Conference Choir. All-Eastern includes those states east of the Ohio and is highly competitive. However, Kelley, who has already been in two New York State Conference Choirs, is an exceptionally talented young vocalist. Class Planned Jefferson Community College is offering an adult education class this March on Personal Financial Planning. The class will meet three consecutive Tuesday evenings beginning March 17 from 6:30-10 p.m. at the college. It is designed for people of all incomes and occupations as well as those retired. The $50 fee covers the cost of instruction and all materials. A workbook and study aids are included in the fee. Registration deadline is Thursday, March 12. To request information, call Jefferson Community College at 782-5250. Kelley, a senior, has been in vocal competition since eighth grade. She received perfect scores in both her sophomore and junior years. She is a member qf the high school chorus and has been a contributing member of the drama club in various musicals including \God- spell\ \Annie Get Your Gun\ and \Sound of Music\. In addition to jazz choir and select chorus, she has also been in the Oswego All-County choruses since eighth grade and is editor of the school yearbook. This past summer, Kelley was accepted into and worked in \Summerfame\. She is an active member of her church and church related activities. She has performed throughout her highschool career for different com- munity groups and clubs. The All-Eastern conference chorus will meet in Baltimore March 6-9.
