Day Care Happenings Many, many thanks to everyone who made us all so happy at the Day Care Center throughout our Christmas festivities. The candies, cookies, cupcakes, gifts, Santa's visit and caroling were meaningful experiences that made this Christmas unique in itself. A special thanks to DeEtte Marshall for sharing her musical talents with all the children, it was an enjoyable time for all. With the holidays and 1986 behind us we are looking forward to a better ,and exciting 1987. Our children are enjoying the snow that we're having thus far in 1987. Outside activities are prevalent with them, especially making snowmen. The month of December was a busy month for us and the children, filled with joy and laughter. The first two weeks, the children spent making Christmas decorations; Christmas wreaths, Christmas candles, Rudolph puppets, paper gingerbread men, Christmas trees, angels, Santa faces, decorations for our Christmas tree and Christmas cards. The third week we spent alot of time making a special gift for each parent.. We all enjoyed our Christmas party held on Friday, December 19. Santa paid us a visit bringing a gift for each child. The children and staff enjoyed trying to break the pinata made for us by Katrina and DeEtte Marshall. Miss Amy ended up giving it her expertise in swinging a stick to break it open. A good time was had by all especially Miss Amy. On December 22, Miss Teresa along with the rest of the. staff took the children caroling over to Springbrook Apartments where the children entertained the residents with Christmas songs. On Tuesday, the 23 the children entertained the Senior Citizens at lunch time at the Senior Nutrtiion Site, the children sang Jingle Bells, Away in the Manager, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and Up On The House Top, to name a few. On the 29 the children returned to the Center after the Christmas holidays filled with vin and vigor. Questions were flying over what each other received from Santa. Well, January sure came in like a lion for us here at the Center. We started the new year off right with a full enrollment. The topic of discussion we started January off with, was the concept of design making - using water colors the children observed the effect of water in bringing out a design on paper after painting over white crayon marks; using the same concept the children made a design using glue and then placing toothpicks on the glue to make individual designs. Using their sense of touch and sight the children gained an understanding of op- posites-up-down; open- closed; big-little; hot-cold; this concept was then rein- forced by the children making picture cards of opposites (winter-summer). During the month we have also discussed the four basic shapes (triangle, square, circle, rectangle), as well as the idea of using different objects to make different shapes such as honeycomb cereal to make snowflakes; colors, with emphasis on the three primary colors (red, yellow, and blue); counting, the children made a number igloo using the concept of rote counting. We have also place an emphasis on gross motor skills via games such as the snowmen toss this month. And we will end the month improving the children's counting skills, recognizing shapes and sizes. The children will construct a snowman by putting the circles together from largest to smallest. Recognizing likenesses and differences by matching pairs of mittens. We will also discuss hygiene with the children. Mrs. Beverly Butler, our day care nurse who is now on staff at the Center on Wednesdays every other week from 9-1, will give us a presentation on what hygiene means and what are good hygiene habits. This presentation is geared to the preschool level. We will also be discussing some of the different con- cepts of weather, what it is and what causes frost and dew. The children will then draw a window outline on construction paper and then by using a paint brush dip in water and sugar and brush it on the window. The after effects will look like frost on a window pane. UPCOMING EVENTS include a winter fun day in February; we are planning to take the children sliding and ice skating. IMPORTANT AN- NOUNCEMENTS: The Pulaski Day Care Center will hold it's annual board meeting January 27 at 7:30 p.m. Keep this date free please, parents, staff members, board members and friends. We would like to have a good turn out this year, that is, if the weather cooperates. Now is the time to enroll your child if you are con- sidering day care this year. We are now operating at full capacity and have a well established waiting list. We are looking into the possibility of expansion and would welcome any ideas anyone might have. And - while I was playing with our littliest one, Aimee Gadway, and acting quite foolish one of our three year olds, Cortney Bigelow turned to me and said, \Miss Amy, babies don't like that. A REMINDER: We now have our own snow day policy so listen to WSCP or WHEN for the Center's closings due to inclement weather conditions, it will be announced before 6:30 whenever possible. If in doubt call the Center.
