Girl Scouts Fly-Up r Senior Girl Scout, Chandra Tackney, of Sandy Creek Cadette/Senior Troop #798 was honored at the Fly-Up and Awards Ceremony held on June 16. She became the Fourth recipient of the Silver Award this year in that troop. The Silver Award is the second highest recognition in Girl Scouting and represents four years of work in areas of leadership, volunteerism and Girl Scout Interest Projects and Challenges. Chandra, a sophomore at Sandy Creek High School, is the daughter of Judy and Bob Tackney. She has been in scouting for nine years. Pictured are: leaders Georgia Gola and Sandra Comstock with Silver Award recipient, Chandra Tackney and her mother, Judy. \Together we can do it if we want to...\ were the words of the song playing as the Girl Scouts of Orwell and Sandy Creek marched in to their Fly-Up and Awards Ceremony. The song was especially appropriate under the circumstances, as shortly before the event began, the power lines to the building were downed by a falling tree. Despite the full-force winds, thunder, lightening and a power outage, the Scouts calmly proceeded with their ceremony. Only the use of candles signaled a change in plans. The following Daisies of Troop #906 flew up to Brownies; Jessica Brown, Bree-Ann Carr, Tabitha Cole, Rachel Gregg, Angela LaPierre, Kristy Wood, and Bonnie Young. Three girls fipm Brownie Troop #809 flew up to Juniors. They are Barbara Freeland, Tamara Ladouceour, and Laura Salzman. The entire Brownie Troop #785 flew up to Juniors. Troop members are Jessica Alexander, Christina Brodeur, Mary Brown, Tina Brown, Danielle Carr, Phyllis Dillabough, Jennifer Douglass, Mary Gregg, Amber Ingraham, Sarah Mattison, Stephanie Paulk, Kristi Poole, and Staci Stowell. Junior Scouts Amy Jo Farmer and Barbara Hulbert of Troop #83 flew up to Cadettes. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Silver Award to Chandra Tackney of Cadette/Senior Troop #798. Mary Ann Pauley, Troop Administrator of the Pulaski/Sandy Creek Service Unit, congratulated Miss Tackney on behalf of the Central New York Area Girl Scout Council. The other three recipients of this award, Sheryl Comstock, Cheryl Gola, and Kristin Kehoe, also honored Miss Tackney for her achievement. The Girl Scouts wish to express their thanks to the United Methodist Church of Sandy Creek for graciously sharing their social hall for this event and for supporting Girl Scouting in other ways throughout the year. The agency is in need of foster homes, particular^ homes which are willing to accept teenagers. \Foster parenting is not the same as parenting your own child,\ said an agency official. \Foster parenting is rnmmittinK yourself to a ~ child, helping them grow, providing love and care, and then letting them return to their pwn family.\ Children placed in foster care, from birth to age 17, are emotionally and sometimes physically damaged. Sandy Creek student Stephanie Pierce has been notified that she is the recipient of an Empire State Scholarship of Excellence. The purpose of this award is to \recognize and encourage talented New York Students to pursue their education.\ The same eligiblity requirements used for Regents College Scholarships are used for these awards, of which 1,000 are granted, each year, to students who have attained the highest scores in the scholarship competition.
