Please put this date on your calendar TODAY and mention it to friends who might have\ missed it: Bluff Pavillion, July 16. Our fishing this week on the lake has been spotty, at best. The charter boats that are fishing every day, of course have the advantage, as very often they can pick up the fish in the morning at the same place they left them the night before. This doesn't always work though, as a sudden storm can throw a whole different light on the fishing picture. For some reason, the thermo bar is not establishing itself as definite as is used to, but the water is still cold near shore so maybe we will get one yet. Jimmy and I picked up lake trout close to shore Tuesday in 20 ft. of water. We kept the large one as it was heavily lamprey- damaged, one of the worst I've seen this year, but it still slammed the little chartreus and orange stinger. Oddly enough, this one hadn't been feeding on alewyyes, instead it had a 5\ spawning minnow it had just taken with the egg sack still in its body. No other fish remains were apparent but there were three other complete pods of eggs from other spawning minnows it had eaten before. Why these didn't digest along with the rest of the minnow, I'll have to get back to some of the fish and wildlife boys for some answers. They are working out of Alcott with the \KAHO\ right now on a rainbow smelt assessment, before they proceed on to Canada. I should have a complete rundown' on the activities of our research boats onn both Lake Ontario and Erie next week. If the lake behaves itself, we will be doing tests on the new lure from Great Lakes Lure Co., the \Oakie Doakie\ This triple action lure, which is the brainchild of Junior Oakes of Elmira, N.Y.,~ is being widely used in the west end of the lake but not too heavy here yet. I am sure its going to be a fantastic salmon lure, but Junior says its good for everything. So thats what we are out to find out. One trip won't possibly give us all the answers, but the more we test, the more information we get. Stingers didn't set the world on fire immediately on arrival but after we got some people to using them, they were dynamite, and still are. For the information of you fishermen, Stinger is coming out with a new size between the smallest and the next larger size. It is my opinion that this could be just what we need, very often the smallest seems a bit tiny, (although that is what I took the 20 lb. brown on and a 28 lb. king) and the next larger size is a little large. This new size might be just right and also we have a new color coming up, silver and pounded silver finish. Jim Martino, the inventor and Manufacturer, says this is on account of me. I tried to get him get to to come up with silver every since he made the first lure, and to do this on aluminum was very difficult but after years of ex- perimentation, he finally came up with it. I am really looking forward to testing this one. He is also coming up with a brass casting stinger, this is something we really needed. Some of the tackle shops won't agree with me on the need for these new lures, but if the fish like them, that is the name of the game. The decisions of the courts have finally been given on the use of the name Stinger, and the lure will be allowed to be marketed as \Stinger\ in New York and the New England states as \Stinger\, but in Michigan, it will be marketed as \Honey Bee\. The largest Stinger came out last fall as the Honey Bee, this is also being re-designed this year. All \Stingers\ and \Honey Bees\ aare white on the back, but can be painted easily any color the fishermen desirre. came out last fall as the Honey Bee, this is also being re-designed this year. All \Stingers\ and \Honey Bees\ are white on the back, but can be painted easily any color the fishermen desire. This was done to keep the price of the lures down, but sometimes white is best anyway. I understand Bill Santoro, RD 4 Churchill Rd., Oswego, caught a nice king on a Oakie Doakie out of Henderson Harbor recently. If he will give me a call I'd like to get the whole story on the en- counter from him. My no is 963-7488. I get carried away sometimes on new lures, but these could be very important to the fishing industry in this area. Fish change their minds from year to year; I have seen the advent of the River Runt spook, the Abu-Reflex, the Flatfish, Mirro-Lure. The J- plug fell off last year, but the Loco held up. The squid and all manner i if flash flys made their debute last year, so anything could happen this, only time will tell. I'll have the report on the June ELOSTA and Sport Fishery Advisory Board meeting next week, along with alot of more in- formation on some of our unansered questions.
