Bass Season Opened June 21 Largemouth and smallmouth bass should be active and hitting on both live bait and artificial lures for the opening of the bass season Saturday, June 21, Environmental Conservation Commissioner Henry G. Williams reported. \New York lakes and rivers provide some of the best bass fishing in the world and this year's catches should be excellent,\ Williams said. Early season bass fishing often produces the best catches of the year and Williams encourages anglers to throw back some of the lunker bass to promote the continuation of a quality fishery., \Recent studies have in- dicated that harvest controls and catch-and release fishing are important in maintaining good bass fishing,\ the Commissioner said. \The big fish, which can take more than eight years to replace, are essential for panfish control.\ The general regulations permit the taking of up to five fish per ** day and set a 12-inch minimum size. The bass season runs through November 30. Special rules and exceptions for some waters are listed in the fishing regulations guide. To minimize potential adverse health impacts from contaminants in the fish, the New York State Department of Health recommends that no one eat more than one meal per week of fish from any water within' the state. Several waters also have more restrictive advisories. Anglers should consult their copy of the Fishing, Small Game Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide for further details. Mid-to-late June should provide excellent fishing opportunities throughout the state. Traditional hot spots for bass include the Mohawk River,~ Green- wood Lake, The Amawalk Reservoir, Saratoga Lake, Lake Champlain, The St. Lawrence River, Black Lake, Oneida Lake, Chautauqua Lake, Lake Erie, the Susquehanna River and the shallow areas of the Finger Lakes. Additional information on bass fishing in New York is available from local bait and tackle shops or from any of the nine Regional Fisheries Offices of DEC. A free brochure \I Love New York Bass, Walleye, Pike, Panfish and Musky Fishing,\ is available from any of the DEC Regional Fisheries \ Offices or by writing to: Bureau of Fisheries, Rom 518, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12233. \I am a believer in punctu- ality though it makes me very lonely.\ E.V. This was Tom's second hole in one and it contributed to a four under par round of 31 on the back nine at the Elms. His playing companions were Jim Sanderson and Jim Fahnestock, and his league partner, Ted Prescott. Unfortunately he had not yet purchased insurance against a hole-in-one and the entire league celebrated the big event at bis expense. Oh well, it could have been worse- suppose it had occurred during Ernie Reuber's Masters? If you haven't bought your insurance yet, see Pam LaSalle at the bar. The President's cup is the next big tournament. It will start with a qualifying round on Saturday, June 28. Sign up sheets are now up in the pro shop. (SENIOR LEAGUE) - June 16 Twelve players were present and the quartet of Hughes, Walklet, Wart and Bush were the winners of the day. Groman and 4th place by Bob Maitland and Linda Cowan - Wayne Wyman and Simone Cooper. The Ladies Wednesday morning league was rained out and the Thursday night ladies was incomplete so the scores were unavailable. I wouldn't have blamed the ladies if they had smashed any recordings of Eddie Rabbits \I Love A Rainy Day\ they may have had. FOOTNOTE: At the awards dinner of the Ernie Reuber Masters a lady was sitting with her shoes kicked off under the table. Suddenly she felt her feet being tickled. She hadn't realized that people sitting at a lower level could observe this, until a certain gentleman let her know. The butler got off scott-free.
