Monday, June 23, 1986 Banner Times-Page^l3 Grange Rural America Sewing Contest Winners Announced Albion Cross Roads By Neva Robinson Team Takes First The women's activities department of the National Grange sponsors an annual nationwide sewing contest for men, women and children of all ages. Over 44,000 people entered the 1986 competition which culminated in New York City last week where national judging took place at the Simplicity Pattern Co., one of the co-sponsors of the contest. Mary Buffington, National Director of Women's Activities for the Grange, said that after local, county and state judging, the gar- ments winning first place in each state were sent to New York for national judging by a team of eight experts in the sewing and fashion field. The contests has four categories which include Qass A, adult clothing sewn by adults. Class B, teen clothing sewn by contestants in the age group of 13-18, Class C, children's clothing sewn by adults and Class D, boys and girls clothing sewn by contestants age 12 and under for themselves. The first place national winners in the 1986 National Grange Sewing Contest are Class A, Marian Reimer, Medford, Okla., Class B, Michele Krejny, Maple Heights Ohio, Class C, Gertrsde Hill, W. Brook- field, Mass. and Class D, Debbie Bodeau, Wilbur, Washington. The first place national winners in Classes A, B and C receive an ex- pense paid trip to the National Grange convention in Madison, Wis., in November where a Best of Show will be announced and awarded $1000 by the National Grange. All first place national winners receive a Singer sewing machine and first place Class B receives a $500 scholarship from Simplicity Patterns. National winners may also be eligible to receive cash and mer- chandise awards from ad- ditional co-sponsors of the contest, The Dritz Cor- poration, CM. Offray & Son, Inc. and B. Blumenthal & Company. Offray ribbons selected Marian Reimer and Michele Krejny to receive special awards for the most creative use of ribbons. B. Blumenthal awarded their National Button Award to Ethel Sebastian, Wilton, Ct. for her most imaginative use of buttons. Second and third place winners were Class A, Sue Johnson, Whitefish, Mont., Virginia Sloop, Mooresville, There hasn't been much news around here lately. The gardens are in and the rain keeps coming, which we don't need. The frost came and done our blueberries in- all froze. The last two days really were something dif- ferent \Sun\. Sue, Doug and Shelly Haynes have moved into their new home. We sure are going to miss them. Dave and Deanne Man- waring have been helping his mother, Bea Manwaring, move into Springbrook Apartments. Ralphy Selden of Mexico called on us Robinson's Wednesday. Deanne and Dave Man- waring and Rhonda, Gary Mitch and 'Heather Phillips spent the weekend in Derrick. Rhonda and family came home today (Sunday). Deanne and Dave will be home Tuesday. Dawn Robinson of Syracuse spent the weekend with her folks, Dawn was on vacation in Canada and Niagara Falls on her birthday the 3rd of June so we celebrated her birthday and Father's Day Saturday evening at Vera and Karen's for a cook-out. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Novak, N.C., Class B, Jul Swiggum, ^ and Mrs Dave Warreilj Monroe, Wis., Susan Waack, ^^ Phmips ^^ Warren's Shelbina, Mo., ClassC, Ethel mother) were ^e ^Q to Sebastian, Wilton, Ct., celebrate Father's Day and also Dave Warren's birthday. Vernie and Matt were also there. Leon Kellar spent one day last week in Syracuse visiting friends. Millie, John and Scott Souva stopped in Saturday to visit with us. Scott and Sherry Petyak are going to be married June 21 in Camden. Scott is in the service and Sherry teaches school in Camden. The best of luck to Jeanie Barone Salinas, Cal., Class D, Tricia Rosenbaum, Charlo, Mont, and Juliann Brauer, Rocky Ridge, Maryland. The 1987 National Grange Sewing Contest will begin Oct. 1, 1986. Donna and Junia Archer came up Sunday to wish her dad a Happy Father's Day. Had a telephone call from Carl and Ada May Wescott the other day. They are both good. Little Matt Robinson spent the day with his Gram and Gramp Robinson Sunday while his mom and dad and brother Vernie, were at the \Northern Blue Jay's\ doings at the Fair Grounds in Sandy Creek. Dr. Jay Sullivan spent Sunday with his mother, Alice Sullivan. Trumble Awarded Ray Trumble (senior, outfielderr from Lacona) received the 1986 Captain's Award for St. Joseph's baseball team. Trumble was also recognized for reaching the 100-hit plateau during his career, and was one of 26 players who received mongrams for the 1986 season. The Wednesday Night Sandy Creek Women's Commercial Bowling League held their annual awards banquet at the River Valley Inn on May 7. The Gas Mart Team took first place for the 1985-86 season.
