SANDY CREEK LIBRARY NEWS Margaret Kastler Librarian John Vinton, The Adirondack Story Teller, was warmly received by about 75 people who gathered at the town hall May 7. Friends of Ainswofth Library, who sponsored the event as their first endeavor, consider it a success from every angle. Those who missed hearing this man were deprived of a genuine cultural treat. We are grateful to John for his per- formance and anticipate offering more programs of this type in the future. Much applause and many thanks to Marie Parsons and her assistants from the Town History Com- mittee; Frank and Marguarite Syder and Sally Turo, for setting up the Local History Exhibit. This display, featuring local artists and authors, past and present, was warmly received by those attending the story telling program. Our thanks , also, to the many con-, tributiors for their offerings from personal collections. We look forward to doing other things of this nature in, the future. While passing out laurels, we must not neglect our local dairy vrincess, County Dairy Promotion Com- mittee, who topped off the evening with refreshments. LITERACY VOLUNTEERS training classes wound up on May 16. We are glad to announce that we now have nine well-trained, local area, volunteer tutors ready to help improve literacy in our community. Thanks and praise are offered to Pat Kardash, our very- able instructor, for her guidance. She is \quite a lady\!! THE WORLD OF GENEALOGY, a free seminar, conducted by Ronald Bremer of Salt Lake City, is coming to our town hall on June 12. Sponsored by \The Friends\ this program should be of great interest to those involved with \Roots\ and \Family Trees\. As an adjunct to this program, we will display loca talent family histories for your enjoyment. COMMENT: This week's column seems to be mostly concerned with \success\. So perhaps we should continue in the same vein. While we have said much about our needs, we should point to tour successes as well. It is time to offer a bit of praise; such as: the Sandy Creek Town Board for their support; The Library Board, who work for free and establish policy, our very able librarian, who \runs\ the library and is more concerned with \product\ than salary; to a group of volunteers, without whom we could not function; to those who saw the need for a \Friends\ group and started it: asnd to our citizens, who use and support the library in many ways. What is happening at Ainsworth is tne result oi tne combined efforts of all of these people. True \Community Spirit\ in action. See you next week. More on baseball and softball next week. Orwell Echoes By Deanna Barber Gina Albrecht is home from West Germany visiting her mother Peggy Wood, daughter Amy, brother Richard, grandmother Doris Sampson and sister Arlene Halsey. Friday night, Gina, Richard, Pat, Arlene and Rick Halsey went out on the town to celebrate her homecoming. Gina will be returning to West Germany around the first of July. Don and Martha Sievers took a trip to California during the week of April 29 - May 6. They went to Los Angeles to visit her brother, Leon and Leonard Smith who had been seriously ill. Martha and Don planned their sight-seeing trips for the times her brother was resting as he tired easily. The first day they went to Hun- tington Beach to see the ocean. It was breezy that day so so thex were able to see the surfers. They also saw several off shore oil drilling rigs. One trip they went into Beverly Hills and Hollywood. They saw a few movie star's homes but most were behind tall fences. They were able to see the homes of Kirk Douglas and Gene Kelly though. While they were stopped at a comer they saw Dudlex Moore drive by in a white Rolls Royce. They saw a lot of Limo's, but due to their tinted windows, they couldn't see in. Another trip took them to Long Beach to see the famous Howard Hughes plane \The Spruce Goose\ along with the retired ocean liner \The Queen Mary. Like most tourists, they did a lot of shopping. They even had to buy a duffle bag to put things in. The weather was beautiful for the whole trip with night temperatures in the 60's and mid to high 70's during the day. She said that Los Angeles has a lot of smog but it usually clears about noon. The freeways are as bad is everyone says they are and at rush time, traffic comes to a standstill. Martha said it seemed strange to have the air conditioning on all the time there and come home to jackets and electric blankets. This was her first time on a plane, and although the trip out was smooth, the trip back was a little rough on her. They hit some turbulence from Chicago to Syracuse and she told Don that she'd never fly again. Martha's brother returned to the hospital on Saturday. They returned home on Tuesday and were notified that her brother passed away the following day after a long bout with Cancer. Our sympathy and that of the Com- munity goes to Martha and her family. Anyone having news for this column, please call me mornings at home 298-4385 or Saturdays at the Library 298-5563. Hope everyone has a great week.
