Grapplers Up Record to 5-0 f - r\ i _» 1 1 by Howard Johnson Pal Mac'B powerful wrestling squad goes into the new year with an unblemished 5-0 record after dispos ing of Waterloo and Fairport last week. The 36-24 win over Waterloo featured outstanding matches from Darwin Michelson, Don Craig, Pat Parker, Don Stager, and Tim McDonald. Michelson defeated state represen tative Tom Finnerghty 12-4 at 105 lbs. in what has to be considered an upset. Craig defeated tough Bill Brown 10-1 at 119 lbs Parker re mained unscored upon and set a record when he pinned his man in just 15 seconds. Stager scored a technical fall in the 155 lb. class, and McDonald defeated Tim Mayberry 12-1 at 177 lbs Tony Barbera and Jason Quich also scored pins for the Raiders Palmyra-Macedon Basketball The Fairport match was suppose to be a close one. but the Raiders jumped Fairport early and won the first eight matches for a 36-20 win Pal-Mac knew it had to get points early as the Red Raiders are known to have a lot of power in the heavier weight classes The \Little Guys\ did the job as Shad McDuff won 8-0 at 98 lbs Michelson scored a technical fall, and Barbera gave Pal-Mac a 13-0 lead Palmyra Junior League with a 5-0 shutout at 112 lbs. Don Craig had a real battle but prevailed 9-6, and Quich wrestled very well and scored a 15-3 win to keep the string going The 132 lb. match between Parker and very tough Dan Macca was a war between two wrestlers. Parker lost his unscored on streak but managed some late match points and held onto win 16-9 Scot Kinslow, up and held up from the JV’s to fill in for disabled Mike Strong, came through with a pin in 1:52 seconds in the 138 lb class, and Pal-Mac had a 30-0 lead. Coach Ceaburri gave up a forfeit at 155 lbs. as Don Stager was out of town, but got a 20 seconds pin from Tim McDonald at 177 lbs. to wrap up the match The Pal Mac JV also remain undefeated as they downed Waterloo 49-16 and Fairport 40-31 H a w k s Dow n R o y a ls , Still U n d e fe a te d R a i d e r s W i n T w o by Jim Campbell The Hawks needed a final period rally in order to keep their unbeaten status alive in the Palmyra Com mumty Center Junior Basketball League as they came from behind to overtake the Royals 4640 In other league games, the Wamors remained two games ofTthe pace with a 5S.28.win nver the Rockets, and tfye by Howard Jordon After two close losses a week ago Pal-Mac redeemed themselves with a double overtime victory over William son and a 72-54 easy win over Red Creek The Williamson contest featured an outstanding effort by sophmore Davey Evankovick as he came up with a 17 point, 14 rebound effort and brought the crowd to it's feet with a steal and gigantic “slam dunk’ mid way through the third penod The Raiders trailed early and were not impressive in the first half but made a nice run in the third period The contest went into a first over time and was finally determined in the second when Chris Deagman slip ped a nice pass inside to Dave Ondra who scored the winner Against the alwayB tall Red Creek Rams, Pal-Mac got ahead 18-13 after one penod and pulled away gradually for the easy win High sconng Chns Deagman had a cold shooting game (even though he finished with 25). and Evankovick was home sick But Gary Haigh was a demon on the boards and dropped in 13 points as he really showed his value. Steve Green also did a good job against the bigger Rams before foul ing out with six minutes left The entire Pal Mac bench got quite a bit of playing time, and all but one scored Celtics defeated the Knicks 47 33 The Hawks found themselves on the short end of a 34 28 score at the end of three penods against the Royals JefT Herbst and Rodney Moses sparked the Royals to a 24 21 lead at the half with Herbst tossing in 13 points up to that point, Moses contributed nine Scott Procious had 13 for the Hawks Palmyra Men’s League in the first half and Mike Paliotti scored three buckets in the first half lo keep the Hawks within striking distance Procious and Eron Lyons with seven points each and Paliotti with four accounted for the 18 points the Hawks scored in the final quarter as they held the Royals to just six points and escaped with the seventh win of the season Procious finished with 22 points. Lyons 14 and Paliotti 10 for the win ners while Herbst and Moses each had 16 for the Royals - The Warriors received 23 point games from both Brian Murray and Andy Wahl as they had little trouble in winning for the fifth time The Warriors held a 20 8 lead at the half and finished ofT with a 24 point final period. Derek Lynch added eight points for the winners. Josh McDuff led the Rockets with nine points The Celtics started slowly against the Knicks as they trailed 10-7 after one penod as Mike Wooden tallied three baskets for the Knicks while Steve Stanziano had six points for the Celtics The Celtics recovered in the second quarter behind Stanziano to take a 20-15 lead at the half They pulled away in the final penod by outsconng the Knicks 17-8 for the win Stanziano led all scorers with 28 points, Matt Davis added seven for the Celtics Rick Colegrove had 21 points for the Knicks N o la n ’ s T a k e s F ir s t L o s s by Jim Campbell Bayne s handed Nolan s their first defeat in the Palmyra Commumt> Center Men s League with a convinc ing 72-55 victory over !ne league leaders as they suffered their first loss of the season against four wins.
