At Lyons the two teams swapped the lead several times, and both units had opportunities to win in regula tion before they went into a scoreless first overtime and finally had the g»m> decided in Lyons favor after the second. Pal-Mae had the lead by four 12-8 alter one period but fell behind 29-22 at the half. Doug Evankovich led the Raiders with 11 of his 19 points in the third period as the score see sawed through out. Chris Deagman took over witb_seven points in the fourth quarter (He scored 25 on the nigbti. Pal-Mac outscored the Lions 19-18 to knot the score at 64 and push it into overtime. Chris Deagman tied it with very lit tle tim* left as he made the front end of a one and one foul but the second shot rimmed out and gave Lyons their opportunity to win. Ed Bunson led the Lyons with 21 and Reggie Walker had ,16. The North Rose-Wolcott contest saw the Raiders play some very poor ball early, and their shots would not drop They found themselves down 32-19 at halftime to the vastly improved Cougars. The Cougars led 14-11 after the first period and pushed the lead to 13 at the half as Pal-Mac did nothing right Hey scored just eight points m the quarter and turned the ball over repeatedly as they tned to force the ball inside or throw it over the ''jump ing jack\ Cougars After trailing by 19 midway through the third. Pal Mac finally got their game together They started a long up hill struggle and outscored North Rose-Wolcott 20-9 to close the ugap to 41-39 entenng the final eight minutes ^ Steve Green came to life in the se cond half as he scored all of his nine points after half time Chris Deagman gotamne of his game high 22 in the third Palmyra-Macedon Wrestling R a i d e r s O f f T o F a s t S t a r t W i t h 3 W i n s by Howard Jordan Coach Fred Ciabum's 85-86 wrestl ing squad opened the season with three lop-sided wins and are currently rated in the top ten of Section V schools They started the season with a 36-19 win over Sodus in which Don Stager got a 50 second pin Don Craig got six team points on a technical fall, and Don Bailey and Tim McDonald had nice decisions Against improved Newark, the Raiders had two forfeits and a pin by Darwin Michielsen for a quick 18 0 lead and coasted to a 42-19 win Pat Parker and McDonald also recorded pins for Pal-Mac while Bob Elmer and Craig scored decisions. Stager record ed a technical fall at 155 lbs., and Jeff Reeves won by forfeit. I BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW brought Did you know there was once a major football game in which the score-and even the winner-were changed 48 hours afler the game was over It happened in 1940 Cornell beat Dartmouth 7-3 But on the Monday after that Saturday game officials of both schools looked at movies of the game and realized Cornell had scored its touchdown on an illegal down Even though Cornell had an unbeaten season go ing. they said they'd give up the touchdown and thereby give up thft victory The result was dfelared reversed and it was officially changed in the record books from Cor nell 7 Dartmouth 3 to Dart mouth 3 Cornell 0 to you by Ike VanPirys Here s quite an oddity The man considered by many to be the greatest foot ball player of alMime Jim Thorpe never played football and never even saw a foot ball game until he was 17 years old1 Here s an amazing football record Quarterback Bart Starr once threw an incredi ble total of 294 passes in a row in National Football League games without hav ing any intercepted That stands as the alltime NFL record for most consecutive passes without any interceptions -and no one else has ever come close to that record ASSOCIATES 229 E M Main S t r e e t • Palmyra. SCOREBOARD PaloTrt Community Center )Gdf et le*|M With two minutes left, the Raiders had a one point lead, but Jones poured in 9 of his 19 dc/n the stretch O'Neal was also a big contributor for the Cougars as he scored 18 before fouling out late m the contest. The Cougars won 57-53. The featured match was at 155 pounds where Stager met strong man Claxton DuVall Stager scored on an early takedown but couldn't hold the tough Cougar senior and ended up on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision This week the Raiders take on a young, strong Waterloo club and also will tangle with big bad Fairport. The JVs are also undefeated after three matches and scored an unbelievable shutout against Sodus They had eight pins and four forfeits for a perfect 72-0 win ability to full advantage Gary Haigh has filled in well on the boards when called upon and “Her bie\ Vaughn is developing in the back court to supply some depth at guard. Their comebacks against two pretty good teams showed that they have some ability and once the matunty is there they will be able to hold a lead once they get it The JV is also not yet quite to their ability but coming fast Their biggest need is another strong board man Last year they depended on Evankovich so have had to adapt without him. Mike Smith has the size but thus far appefiirs reluctant to go inside He has a good sconng touch but could be even more effective if he developed some stronger inside play The wrestlers are ofi to a good start even though their opening match against Sodus was not overly im pressive Both teams suffered from first match nervousness. Don Stager and Tim McDonald had good matches with Stager pinning his opponent quickly and McDonald scor ing a decision over a man that outweighed him by over 30 pounds. They scored more points against the Newark Reds than the Canandaigua Braves were able to and feelings run high that this is the year the Braves get beaten Pal-Mac may not have the opportunity to be the streak stopper however as the strong Marion Knights of Coach Steve Habecker will get the first shot at C A Manon has been very impressive in the early season LOOKING BACK My report on the junior high teams racking up lopsided wins was a bit in error They are not coached by Norb Miller but are the seventh grade team Their Coach is Paul Goodness Their closest contest to date was a 29 point win over Victor, and they did outscore Manon 69-1 There are 15 men on the squad, and the starters average just over one quarter of play ing time per game They do not have exceptional size but play on great quickness ball handling and shooting With squads like this com ing along. Pal-Mac basketball should be solid in the future Clyde-Savannah, as expected, is the only undefeated Wayne County team Everyone else is pretty even and will probably continue that way all year LOOKING AHEAD Coach Tatro is excited about plans for a post season all-star game bet ween stars from Wayne County and the Finger Lakes Tentative plans call for the game to be played follow ing the sectionals, at the Communit\ College of the Finger Lakes The teams would feature at least one player from each school and proceeds would go to chantv More on this ater Clipper* 23 S' b q t u 31 Stun 7* Clipper* Nugget* Stun Plan Kru Ki-lu5G Eojrab 42 51 W»mon Cctoci Rjjytii K&idu Rttieu Buefcj 56 BolWu 49 Soiu • 6“ SezaetUfili • 68 Hunt i ” Junior Le«foe Senior Le«p« Mcs'i L m ( w Nets 14 Pacer? 30 N«t« 25 L 0 2 2 3 C*ltia 24 Wimcn 40 BockeU 36 L 0 2 3 3 Ptccta 4?
