News From Marion Personals Mrs. John Krocke will celebrate her 83rd birthday Saturday. Mr Jacob Haak, Sr., is a patient at the Sodus Hospital. The Rev. Barclay Fishburn, pastor of the First Reformed Church, led the Hymn Sing at the evening service at the Second Reformed Church. At the annual Congregational meeting held Thursday evening at the First Reformed Church, Isaac DeWispelaere was re elected Elder and Richard Loucks, the new Elder. William Arnold was re-elected Deacon and Richard Weis, the new Deacon. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Corteville of East Palmyra were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Abram Boerman. Last week my news stated that Mrs. Abram DeRidder was in Sodus Hospital but she is in the Lyons Community Hospital. Christmas Bazaar To Be Held At Baptist Home The annual Christmas Bazaar at the Fairport Baptist Home will be Friday, November 12th, from 1 00 to 4 00 pm . This is an op portunity for area people to visit this home and to observe the craft work that is done by members of the Home Family. by Mrs. John Murphy Phone 926-5547 Garage Fire Quelled By Marion Firemen Friday evening the Firemen were called to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Boerman, Evergreen Street, to extinguish a fire that started in the garage roof. The Boerman’s were away at the time but the fire was discovered by a neighbor. It is thought that boys threw something that started the fire. Luckily, not much damage was done. Young Members Of Reformed Church Receive Awards Sunday morning at the First Reformed Church awards were made for memorization of the Books of the Old and New Testament. Those receiving awards were Old and New Testament: Robin Weis and Linda VanHaneghem; Old Testament: Rachael Fish burn and Karen Ameele; New Testament: John Ramsey and Bill Fishburn. CHILD CARE CLASSES SET NOV. 11 & 18 “ When Your Child Gets Sick” is the title of two lessons to be taught by Mrs. Ellen Rich of Marion for Wayne County Cooperative Extension on Thursday, November 11th and November 18th at the Alton Center for Extension. Included in the program will be information of help to parents when children are ill or in an emergency situation with an injury. Mrs. Rich, a graduate registered nurse from Keuka College, majored in school nursing. MARY DU PRE WON SLOGAN CONTEST > Mrs. Mary DUPre of Buffalo Street an employee of the State Farm Insurance Company recently was a first prize winner m the northeastern district slogan contest to promote fire prevention. Her slogan was “ Fire Prevention Is Its Own Reward- Consider the Alternatives.” MEN IN SERVICE Coast Guard Cadet Frank C. Halstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Halstead of Route 2, Decker Road, Marion, is at tending the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. There were three categories to choose from-the prettiest, the most unusual, the most original and the scariest. The judges awarded prizes to the following : Funniest-lst Martha- Rich, 2nd Paul Dingman, 3rd Pamela Baker; Prettiest-lst Judy Naeye, 2nd Michell and Jannette Moore, 3rd Tracy DeRidder; Scariest-lst Kevin DeRidder, 2nd Patty Durkee, 3rd Misty Breemes. Most /unusual- and original-lst Cindy and Alan Sargent, 2nd Erin Lucieer and Barbara Taylor, 3rd Smock children and Dean De Maree. There were prizes for the largest and the smallest decorated pumpkin which were won by Lori De Maree having the largest and Patty Durkee for the smallest decorated pumpkin. Christmas Seals Aid Research Medical research is receiving a $1,518,000 shot in the arm this year, thanks in part to local Christmas*Seal contributions. Dr. John M. Davis, Newark, President, Finger Lakes Area Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association announced that total was allocated by local, state and national units of the National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association (NTRDA) to underwrite a wide range of investigations aimed at unveiling new information about lung diseases. Of this, $302,000 is earmarked for a nationwide “seed money” research- program administered by NTRDA. The Finger Lakes TB and R D Association also provides a direct research grant to the Pulmonary Unit, University of Rochester School of Medicine. LEE JOHNSON APPOINTED TO STATE PARKS COMMITTEE Governor Rockefeller has announced the appointment of a 30 member State wide Parks Advisory Committee to give laymen a greater role in the development of a Statewide Parks and Recreation Plan. Included in those appointed to this board is C. Lee Johnson, Marion, president and manager of Marion J. Johnson Inc., farms. Mr. Johnson is a life long resident of Wayne County with a deep interest in this special area of concern. This committee will assist the Office of Parks and Recreation in the developing of a long-range plan, giving consideration to the viewpoints of such components in the recreation field as municipalities, public schools, voluntary recreation agencies, private agencies, and the com mercial and industrial recreation industry. Newark Players Plan Program When “ Here’s Love” is staged December 2-5, it will be the ac tors, singers, dancers and musicians who appear on stage who will receive the applause. Many more members of the Newark Players are involved in getting this production onto that stage. One of the busiest and most involved is director, Frank Russell, Jr. who does not lack for experience in this field.
