M o s t F i r e L o s s e s C a n B e A v o ided T h e fin a n c ial losses incurred throu g h fire are u s u a lly covered b y insurance. B u t in s u ran c e can n e v e r fu l l y com p e n sate for loss o f life , lo s s of a job, or loss of a su c c e s s fu l business. Often this also m e a n s th a t the city w ill lose ta x a b le property, because to d a y a f t e r a fire the ow n e r s often u s e th e in s u ran c e m o n e y to relo c a te in som e other m o re su it a b le lo cation. L a s t y e a r the d o llar vo lu m e o f fire losses in the U n ited S t a t e s clim b e d to a new h ig h o f $1,0 2 3 ,- 190,000, up 3.4% fro m 1956. D u r in g the past ten years, the ann u a l d o lla r v a l u e o f fire losses had jum p e d 43.9% . O f course, in f la tion o f b u ildin g costs h a s been im portant factor in th is in c rease. N e v e r t h e less, the sad fa c t is that lo s s e s o f life and o f p ro p e r ty fro m fire are excessively and un n e c e s s a r ily high. On J u l y 13th th e U n ited C h u rch w ill celebrate the 150th an n iver sa r y of the organization o f W a r saw ’s first religious society, T h e F i r s t Congregational C h u r c h of W a rsaw , w h ich w a s form e d Ju l y 14 , 1808 w ith ten m e m b e rs. L a t e r it becam e affiliated w ith the P r e s b y terian denom ination. In 1840 n e a r ly h a l f the m e m b e rs w ith d r e w and organized a new C o n g r e gational church. In the f a l l o f 1943 h o w e v e r their differen c e s h a v in g been forgotten m a n y lon g decades before, the tw o congregations v o ted to m e rge and on F e b r u a r y 13 , 1944 the U n ited C h u rch of W a r saw , Congregational and P r e s b y terian w a s o f fic ia lly constituted. T h is sesquicentennial celeb r a tion w ill be held at m o r n in g se r vice J u l y 13th at ten o’clo c k w ith a n h istorical address b y R e v . H e r bert G . H e w a s the son o f F r a n k G . and N o rm a H a lstead K a h l and w a s riding on the rear o f the m a c h ine w ith h is cousin, G a r y K a h l w h o w a s operating it in rev e r s e w h e n he fe l l off and the tractor passed over him . H e w a s r u s h e d to the W y o m ing C o u n ty C o m m u n ity H o spital b y the R e s c u e S q u a d at about 1 2 : 1 5 and lived o n ly a few m inutes.
