Th e N e w Y o r k H igher Educa tion Assistance Corporation, a non-profit organization to m a k e loans to college students, w i l l be in fu ll operation w ith th e begin ning o f the n e w fiscal y e a r on A p r i l 1st. T o g ive the corporation impetus, the 1958 Legislature pas sed and the G o v e r n o r signed a measure to perm it state guarantee o f students’ loans uj? t o f $ l ,000 per school year with a $5,000 ceiling on the total to a student during his school career. T h e corporaion was established by the Legislature in 1957 to im prove the higher educational op- 1 portunities of residents of this 1 state in the low and m iddle in com e brackets w h o attend colleges in this state or elsewhere, by lend ing funds to assist them in m e e t ing th e ir expenses. L o a n m o n e y w ill b e obtained b y the corpora tion from individual gifts, contri butions from industry and grants from foundations. O n e provision gives the corpor ation p o w e r to hold real property that w o u ld be exem p t from ta x a - ! tion in the same m anner as p r o p - je r t y held b y educational institu- ! tions.
