The Canadian authorities are experlenc ing the same trouble hi enforcing the Scott Act that the local officers of the' towns of this and other states do in con- victing those who sell liquors without a license, It is wonderful what blank memories will be found and what little knowledge will be snown of what was drank by men called to testify in such cases. Why do men \sell their birthright for a mess of pottage?\ Those who sell do not expect men to twist, turn, and prevaricate under oath to save them from being fined. They take the responsibility on their own shoul- ders when they make a sale and he who I liuys is under no obligation to shield tbom. The following is clipped from a Canada paper: \Prevarication in all its windings and twistings was apparent at the Scott Act trials here last week, and the fact was continually made clear that the enforce- ment of the Act has no sympathy from witnesses—that 09 out of 100 will side ..... with file liquor] interest and take advant- — ^^S>:^&S,TS*S dpdjre they can think ot^io jMaerdrttfe guilty\' WHY? \ The ADVERTISE:! asked for none of the county printing, expected none, and re- ceived none and it is immaterial to us what papers in the county did get the work to do. Thconly question to usii, why some of • the members of the Board of Supervisors who, if they were selling butter, cheese, or any other article of produce, would be, holding on for the last fraction of a cent per pound, will, when the printing of the sessions laws comes before them vote to give the St. Lawrence HejmlUcan ten cents when some other paper offers to do the same work just as well f(,r six and a half cents. How is the Board obligated individu- ally or collectively to the St. Law. Repul- Ham that it should befriend the \official organ\ by voting it jobs to be paid for from the public purse at a price higher than other papera offer to do the same. Time brings strange things to view. BLAINE AND EDMUNDS. On Sunday afternoon Mr. Blaine paid a visit to the house' of ex-President Ar- thur, ana, as he entered the parlor. Sena- tor Edmunds came forward with great ap- parent cordiality, extending his hand and saying:,, \How do you do, Mr. Blaine?\ MT. Blaine stood with hands holding his hat in front ol him, in a position familiar to all who have met him, and made no response, simply looking Mr. Edmunds in the eye. Seeing some embarrassment, Clayton jWc/tfiohacl said: \You know the Senator, Mr. Blaine?\ Mr. Blaine remained perfectly silent, and Mr, Ed- munds at length, apparently comprehend- ing the situation, retreated to the sofa from which he had risen, A few minutes V::.a~ ?tr. BHric ••.••p-e«cd to M-, Me jWiobiiel and Mr. Miller his sincere regret that an act imperatively demanded from him should have occurred in the house of mourning,— N«m Y<rrh_ Trttwnn. The incident was iinfortiiniite. ft is unfortunate that anything should occur to widen the breach botween the friends of Mt. Edmunds and those of Mr, Blaine; it Is doubly unfortunate that It should \nave occurred in the house of mourning, One thing, however, Is certain: It never would have occurred if Mr Blaine hurt been a dishonest politician. If his only: care was to make votes, he would have responded to the eager advances of the Vermont senator and joined In tho public demonstration of friendship the latter in- vited, no matter how insincere it might have been. But such hypocrisy is shown to bis im- possible to Tames Q. Wainc, He saw before him the man who, after weunying him in 1884, eagerly solicited his friendly offices in 1880 to secure a re-nomination to the Senate, and who with almost in- credible Ingratitude repaid the services he had sought by the publication of a letter breathing insult to Blaine in every line and syllable. That such a mini should have offered his hand to the gentleman he had thus treated, seems a marvel of au- dacity; that the proffer should be resent- ed as it deserves, is just what we should have expected of Mr. Blaine.— Oydenalmry Journal. ..,, The Ladle's Aid Society held an entertainment on the night of the 25th, which was quite n success and a very creditable, performance, especially when the time occupied in the preparation is considered. Nov. 20,—Yesterday, (Thanksgiving Day) will long be remembered by many of the inhabitants of this place, as having returned sincere thanks, \in the orthodox way\ for the many good things received during the past year, and by others for what they expect to get, sometime in the near future. But those who arrived late at divine services, at such times,\ ought to expect v^ry small things, while the re- verse id fihe order, I believe. The day was very stormy and disagree- able, but that did not prevent the boys from having a shooting match. Messrs. Driscoll and McAuIiffe procured a supply of turkeys and measured off i» range said to be 20C yards, but from the, fact that ,Jhcy had moved it away from the. old, and well known 200 yd. range, and the further fact that the turkey was locate 1 on a barrel well up towards Brier Hill, some of the crowd were' inclined to question the distance, but the shooting was to begin at once, and in' the absence ofgthe proprietors, a substitute was found ready to risk his duck, for the usual fee of ten cts. per shot. The duck .only lasted long enough to cam ninety cents profit to the owner, being carried off by u well aimed bullet from T. W. Pierce's gun.' The next applicant for the doubtful hon- or of being shot at, and the certain profit to follow was a fine large grey hen, which died at the early agp ol 7f years. The verdict of the jurors was, '-accidental shooting with a gun in the hands of .Senry Spear. This all occurred before dinner. After partaking of the usual roast turkey, we returned to the range, and was very much surprised to find j)/c- Auliffo on deck giving the \byespointh- ers\ on the size and qualities of each tur- key as it was mounted on the barrel, but he did not have much to do as there was but three killed, and those by II. Spear Prof. Z. Olark and Jus. F. Culligan met their Waterloo here to-day, each shooting nineteen shots and drawing nothing but the privilege of paying ten cents per shot. This is quite a change from the last year's record of the shooting. .., Frank Proctor and Ohns.
